    No he isn’t though. He is effective as a blunt tool but he is massively 1 dimensional right now and hadn't really been that effective for a while as teams had largely adjusted to nullify his pace

    Apart from AdM and Veron all of those players were cheaper than Dan James though. And apart from Bebe they were either well established players or youngsters who came through better youth setups.

    And I'm not saying anyone should have sympathy for the PL clubs but EFL clubs also aren’t owed something for nothing either. If you can get better quality of players from abroad for the same or less then the only people to blame if the important revenue stream of selling players on dries up is the EFL clubs for pricing their players out of moves and also for not providing the same level of training setups to make them as appealing as they used to be. It’s not even as of the addons and sell on fees are better from English clubs, if clubs could save on future fees if the player comes good it would make them more appealing but these are often higher with English clubs as well so it’s a double whammy. I should also note English players are way harder to sell on. You will often make more back (or even a profit) selling a failed player abroad than to a English club but English players are less eager to often move abroad and foreign clubs are often less willing to take English players (although Germany is obviously starting to be more open recently)

    And I'm not even talking about the likes of United either. We have often preferred using another PL club as an intermediate step anyway even if it means paying more but it’s the smaller PL clubs who used to always take a punt on EFL players but it’s becoming less common.

    I'm not arguing that teams don't buy players who end up being 'tripe' but it's not like they weren't bought on merit. Just look at City with the likes of Doyle, he is a proven quality player and one who at Swindon has shown he can be top quality in League 2 but he generally looked awful for you.

    The clubs go with foreign players because on paper they are better value. They may not work out for a variety of reasons but its the same with any player be them Foreign Players or English players from the EFL.

    And its not about the current situation either. All the teams around the world are going to do deals but as the prices from the EFL are higher for players who on paper are worse even with a reduction the prices for the EFL players is going to be higher.

    Must be a very strange feeling getting promoted this way.

    None of that euphoria celebrating wth the players and other fans in the stands.

    Tricky for your board trying to budget at the moment for the step up to league 1. Have you been selling season tickets for example, or have they been suspended like here at Bradford City?

    Do you have a lot of pleyers out of contract?

    Personally, I dont think the EFL will uphold the vote to not relegate anyone. It would set a precedent for other leagues to follow suit.

    Agreed but as I said the FA have the final say and need to do what they said ie relegation or they loose all credibility. But as Swindon says the EFL/FA may know something we don't. Macc have really struggled, Rumours (often dangerous) abound about Oldham and Cheltenham saying they can't afford testing costs for the play offs casts doubts in my mind. There have to be at least four others from bits I picked up during the season, if true of course.

    Given how the world is right now, in this subdued state, there seems very little to celebrate but I'd take being in league 1 next season. I know what you mean about euphoria of promotion, but getting a free pass and not having to worry about whether you can restart in the same form as before the lockdown, must be a huge sigh of relief for Swindon (and us who might be getting a bonus from the Doyle transfer).
    If only Bower had been more adventurous we might have at least been a couple of places higher and possible possibly sneaked through the playoffs under Stuart. Oh well.. who knows what the set up will be next year.

    Yeah, it is strange - can’t really get excited about it. Luckily, our 2 highest earners - Doyle and Grant - we’re only given 6 month contracts in January. I suppose it left them free to seek a bigger pay day if we didn’t get promoted. Anderson, Woolery et al are also OOC but we gave Doughty a 2 year extension a few months ago. I think we were selling early bird ST renewals before the lockdown - no idea on the numbers. Power and the Supporters Trust were about to purchase the CG from the council for £2.2m So, hopefully, that money could be diverted to keep the club afloat.

    Reckon most of us are in the same boat when it comes to survival. You just have to hope.

    Have the council agreed to put off the deal for the ground? If not the club may legally still have to proceed. Fingers crossed for you it can be delayed

    I think the Council agreed in principle to the sale. How far down the line regarding legals I don’t really know. The Trust were going to sell shares to fans to raise the money for their half plus they had a fairly wealthy individual who would underwrite any shortfall.

    Just what we need. A shiny new ground for when Aldershot and Sutton rock up!
