Simply not true.

 

Not a fan of Lager beers but a nice cold pint of Amstel does the job while waiting for our new signings to be announced

 

Im thinking 50 years ago, what. Then looking back to 70-75 when hand pulled was the exception rather than the norm there was some cracking Tetley pints to be found

Jacobs Well, Bedford up Wakey Rd, one by Crofts at Thornbury were like drinking milk. Bloody brilliant beer. The best of the best was Jacobs Well around 70 73 imho

Purple Nasty ? Half a Guinness, half a cider with a pernod & black thrown in. Makes a snakebite seem like lemonade

 

Yuk, still remember one of my workmates asking for a bitter and blackcurrant in the Salthorn, for a minute I thought Donald was going to deck him. He settled for refusing to serve him on account that he'd never do that to his beer.

 

Yuk it was too, but boy did it get the night off to a good start

 

Didn’t get upstairs mate to the Boutique Bedrooms , outside in the backyard DJ blasting out some good sounds and a slice of orange in my Blue Moon .

All went down hill for the big northern hand-pull bitter names after the Health and Safety brigade killed the autovat system (although Bradford kept onto it for a bit longer than most), and the then rise of the conglomerates and their push for profits by changing the drinking habits of the next generation, and more cheaply mass produce and market lager to them (remember - stick lemons in the bottle neck, look like Marlboro man posing at the bar etc?).

And can you still get babycham for the ladies? I think not.

 

Autovac is still available in many pubs. Ling Bob, Lord Clyde both have it. They just have to use a fresh glass.

 

Real men add Brandy to their Babycham, or drink Pony.

It's Aperol now! I'm meant to be a specialist beer bar, yet on a sunny weekend, I'm selling around 350 glasses of Aperol Spritz. Mind you, at 8€ a pop, my profit margin on one of those, is much higher than a pint of craft ale, so I shouldn't be complaining!

 

Really don't understand why anyone would drink that stuff. We had some in Italy on our last foreign holiday, where they basically ram it down you in all the bars, and it was yuk. I've never drunk paraffin but I imagine it would taste something like an Aperol Spritz.

 

Agree but add a neat double whiskey chaser to it, Bitter and Barley wine like nectar
