Clayton Donaldson 13 games 2 goals
James Vaughan 20 games 7 goals
Aramide Oteh 12 games 2 goals
Shay McCartan 8 games 1 goal

The above is the league appearance game/goal record and in fairness includes substitute appearances. Vaughan’s total includes 3 penalties.

Donaldson will be 36 in January and is clearly in the twilight of his career. Vaughan although younger was 31 in July and is a ‘senior’ striker.

Oteh has hardly got into a scoring groove, is he really at a stage in his career where he should score at a rate of a goal in around every third game.

McCartan hardly gets game time, and in contrast to his sub appearances with Lincoln last season, where he had a decent return, doesn’t look as though he is even going to be a 6 goals a season player.

Our two strikers who are out on loan, are scoring for fun, but for me they probably do not have the attributes/skills/performance to return to VP and replicate their current form.

So to put it bluntly we need two competent strikers. If we could turn the possession rate into goals then we would be in a lot stronger position. We seem to be overloaded with midfielders/defenders, but lack quality in the final quarter of the pitch.

For me this is the most pressing issue. Given pretty poor results against: Macclesfield, Leyton Orient, Salford, Port Vale, Cambridge, Scunthorpe and Grimsby where we could/should between those games, have got another ten to a dozen points. We are going to run out of opportunities to pick up points against lesser teams and secure an automatic place.

We need new strikers and they have to be a priority. I would let Oteh return and see if anyone is interested in McCartan. If Patrick and Doyle are also not playing for us, then four strikers should offer enough of an option to get the goals to propel us forwards, and be affordable/compatible with the FFP rules.

I think we miss Clayton, I haven't fact checked it but it certainly feels like we miss him quite a bit.

I think it's more Bowyer setting us up for failure in formations that starve our strike force of any chances, with the chances falling to defenders that consistently miss. I don't think Doyle would've faired as well here as he is at Swindon, Swindon set out to win and Bowyer settles to draw

To play in this division you must have a Clayton Donaldson or a James Hanson.
We are lucky to have the right player in Donaldson but our attacking shape has to have that player.
Since he got injured we have not been able to create because he is not there as a target and holder up.
Our goalscoring has been totally impacted by his absence.
We were completely remiss in not having a like for like replacement in the event of his injury in the squad in the recruitment in the summer.
Vaughan has tried admirably to fill the gap but is neither the right shape nor style.
We will be fine when we get Donaldson back but we must find a natural squad option for the bench from January.
    Keep the faith

We could have Kane and Lewandowski upfront and Bowyer would make them look Sunday league level.

Have a look at the league leaders pal. I reckon you're talking nonsense.

Today that argument makes a lot of sense, what doesn't help is where fans blindly criticise the team and Bowyer - IE, the last home game.

That shouldn't have been criticised too heavily buy for the players missing chances, but I still heard Bowyer getting criticism and even heard the word boring.

I accept it's time to start really scrutinising whether GB can pick is up or not, because play offs are a minimum and I will be very concerned should we slip below 7th at some stage - but we must remain fair.

If you project Clayton’s current strike rate across the season, it would mean a personal tally of 7. Frankly not enough. His ratio at present is a single goal every six and a half games.

First half last week we were excellent, but the problem was the chances were falling to defenders who can't finish (as expected), but second half Salford had figured us out and we didn't adapt to the game whatsoever which is probably my main concern with Bowyer (alongside his subs), the forwards were starved and we should quite frankly be going for the kill against teams like these, especially when we were 1-0 up

The fact that Bowyer couldn't play to Doyle's strengths is the biggest embarrassment with each passing week. He played him as a number 10 ffs. When has Doyle ever looked like that sort of player? Never, that's when!

He has Vaughan playing as a target man when fit. Shay can't even get in the team up front before a midfielder.

A midfielder with abysmal finishing, no disrespect to Connolly for his effort.

A manager will never play to players strength.
He assembles a squad to play his interpretation of the game.
Therefore he's to blame for recruiting wrong.
If his preferred formation is 3-5-2 then we need 2 new wing backs, another number 10 to compliment Pritchard and ditch Connelly.
There's a part of me that thinks he's trying to keep it solid until he can play the 4-3-3 with Clayton flanked by Ismail and Connelly

I too find myself wondering along those lines -- it's as if, with all the injuries and illnesses, he's maybe lacking confidence in the team he puts out, and so has decided to be solid defensively and hope to nick a 1-0 win. To be fair, with some of the recent defensive miscues and offensive ineptitude, perhaps he has a right to be lacking in confidence!

I agree ......... CD would make all the difference ........... But nomoreso than having MORE players available in and around the box, when pressuring the opposition. Our last three games have been screaming out for just THAT. :)
Beyond time of the 'must not lose' - Let's begin a 'must win' mentality. ;)

Exactly. When faced with a puzzle, you get the correct pegs for the holes - NOT buy a bigger hammer to drive any pegs in....... in any hole. (They only fit once or twice before they become slack and pointless, wherever.) :)
