    Might as well be !

With the stadium being on the very outskirts of Colchester, then there is little in the choice of pubs. David Prior informs me; ‘The Dog and Pheasant on Nayland Road, is probably the closest to the stadium, although it is still around 3/4’s of a mile away. However, it is only admitting home fans’. Audrey MacDonald a visiting Hartlepool United fan adds; ‘We visited the Dog and Pheasant and were admitted okay, although we weren’t wearing colours. The pub had a good choice of beer and did food too. To find the pub, go down to the end of United Way, then at the end turn left into Boxted Road and at the mini-roundabout go straight over into Nayland Road. The Dog and Pheasant is on the right next to a fish and chip shop’. About one and half miles away on the Ipswich Road (A1232, off A12/A120) is the Balkerne Gate pub, which is part of the Brewers Fayre chain.

If you are arriving at Colchester North Station then directly opposite on Bergholt Road is the Bricklayers Arms, which normally has a good mix of home and away fans inside. This pub serves real ale from Adnams and Sharp’s, shows Sky Sports and also does food. Les Fry a visiting AFC Bournemouth fan adds; ‘We and a few other Cherries fans drank in the Bricklayers pub near to the station and experienced no problems.’

Alternatively, you can take the short train ride from Colchester (North) mainline station to Colchester Town, around which there are plenty of pubs to be found. Ed Aitken adds; ‘A decent bet for a pub near town station is the Odd One Out pub at the bottom of Mersea road (about a two minute walk). It is the most traditional real ale pub in Colchester, although swearing is banned!’ A 5-10 minute walk away is the Playhouse, which is a Wetherspoons outlet. That’s it.

In the town centre, so about 3.5 miles from the ground, but we found the Purple Dog, to be a good choice. Perhaps an UBER between four would make the distance/cost doable. https://thepurpledogpub.co.uk/

That sounds good . Fortunately I think the son is driving to the ground . Bit convoluted… me from N Norfolk to him in Bury SE then him driving the rest in his car. I’ll try to get him to have half a day off work ?

A roman throw back no doubt. There was probably a defensive point a mile away from the main Fort. Colchester was the original roman capital of england

You would be surprised. We do the Harrogate day out for breakfast followed by a few beers from time to time. We live in Eccleshill so used to get the bus that goes via the Airport. We have started getting the train as the connections from Leeds are good so it's comparable with the bus time wise plus the train as an on-board toilet, which is quite important at my time of life.

There used to be football specials run from Colchester. A few of us went for Dave Pendleton's 50th. We stayed in Clacton but had a few beers in Colchester before (and after) the game and the football specials went from the back of one of the pubs, I can't remember the name of the pub though.

How does an early kick off stop the idiots who get off their face on coke or booze from behaving badly. Never understand that.

The Bricklayers Arms it was; I've had some cracking pints of Adnams Old Ale in there.

I think it's a case of damage limitation, i.e most people will drink less before the match if it's a 12:00 kick off as opposed to say a 17:30 evening kick off, or a traditional 15:00.

You and I both know that this won't detract the hardcore element, who will probably just start the night before, especially if they're on the old marching powder, however for most normal folk who have a drink before the game an early kick off probably means only having 2 or 3 as opposed to 5 or 6.

This is why big derbies i.e the Glasgow derby is always a 12:00 kick off.

Last time I saw him he tried to convince me that he was 75 years old. Maggie has a lot to answer for with the care in the community program.
