Who does he think he is, Boris Johnson?

 

I mentioned this on the other thread briefly.

He was removed by the Tories earlier today and he has resigned as Mayor later today.

As Town Mayor you represent everyone regardless of colour, creed, religion, sexuality, age, etc. If you don't feel you can represent everyone then you shouldn't have that role.

They may throw you off buildings for being gay in other countries, but we aren't living in other countries.

 

I think he would have come out of this better if he had declined the invite for religious reasons and sent someone else.

 

To be fair it's hard to think how he could have come out of this worse.

 

It is the kind of story that ties some in knots. It's a nightmare story for some if they have to pick a side because they would be seen to be offending one minority group whoever they pick. A snake eating it's own tail so to speak.

Religion should have no impact on modern day politics.

 

Honestly I'm not sure many places are that welcoming to the LGBT+ community, regardless of religion.

I remember standing outside the Record Cafe about five years ago before a match and a trans-person walked past. A significant number of Bradford City fans felt it necessary to shout abuse.

Last Saturday morning, I took the dog out for a walk and I found a person who had been subjected to a homophobic attack. They had been stripped and taken an awful kicking,. I waited with them for half an hour until an ambulance arrived, and my partner came down with blankets. It was horrible. I've given a statement to the police but I doubt much will happen.

It's very important that ignorance and intolerance in our society is challenged, wherever it comes from.

 

It's very difficult to be the one who opens the debate on this subject because as soon as you do unfortunately you are given a label.

 

Damned if you do damned if you dont.

 

Or maybe just don't go into a role that involves representing everyone in the community if you're a homophobic and intolerant arseh0le.

 

In theory you are right. I will own up to being a Christian, albeit not a very good one. Over the years when it comes to a lot of modern day issues, be it gay rights, diversity, gender recognition etc, Christianity has been rightly or wrongly being seen as out of touch. You would be a very brave person to adopt that view of Islam in inner city Bradford/Keighley. That is why although I think he should have handled it differently I have some sympathy with the guy.

On the one hand we are screamed at daily to tolerate everyone's beliefs and celebrate this and that - and we are also told to welcome and embrace cultures/beliefs like this fellas, which go against everything tolerance stands for.
