Maybe, but not in public. That was weak management, says more about the manager than the players. He just wanted to pacify the fans, in order to justify his own position. While the fans were patting him on the back for being ‘tough’ it deflected the flack that might have been coming his way!

Disagree. It took public humiliation at Blackpool to get some life out of them.

I'm sure the public criticism was the last resort from Grayson.

I appreciated his honesty. Enjoyed his interviews.

You were supposed to enjoy it, that is my point. I think you will find it was the fans criticism that jolted them into action.

That’s why we need a coach who develops players as well as getting results

He wasn't slagging him off. There was nothing malicious in his comments. He was asked why Gibson wasn't starting and he mentioned how he needs to show more in training. Absolutely nothing wrong with that if it was true. Fans and players are getting far too precious these days. Didn't McCall also say something similar about him? Funny how that was brushed under the carpet...

Thanks. I thought it was Gibson but i knew he'd done something similar to one of our players. I'm sure it was just tough love when McCall did it though.

I am not brushing anything under the carpet. What I am saying and said it at the time, whatever he thinks that needs to change should be said in private and especially when nearly every single player was low in confidence. That applies to whoever is managing the team, the players will have more respect for him as well. It was how it was received that matters, and in these days of mass social media, managers need to be very careful what they say about players regardless of what they are trying to achieve. You are correct Grayson didn’t slag him off, but that didn’t stop fans picking it up and resorting to slagging him off. These days are entirely different from say even 10 years ago. A simple answer to the question would have been, we are trying different players, and systems to try and change results, I was very pleased with his performance!

All managers have their own style. Grayson wasn't one to beat around the bush and used the straight talking, honest approach but contrary to what some posts on here would suggest, was never malicious or unfriendly whilst doing it. That method can and has proved to be just as effective as the arm around the shoulder approach. Players can either use the constructive feedback to better themselves or to sulk. Both Jones and Gibson have chosen to an extent to do the latter. If your manager mentions that you need to do more training, than you do more in training. Unless both McCall and Grayson were blatantly wrong in their assessment then it's not worth making excuses for or getting upset over. If anything, Grayson comments have achieved it's desired effect. If Gibson was lazy in training before he certainly isn't going to be now.Would beating around the bush in interviews have been any better? I doubt it.

I will try again, any discussions take place in private. Where did I say beating about the bush was a good idea? I prefer honesty, plus the player can have a more thorough discussion with the manager.

He was asked the question and he answered it honestly. The suggestion you proposed was beating around the bush. If he was going to rip into him then i agree it should have be kept private. As far as i can remember though he praised his performance (encouragement) and then suggested he needed to show more in training (constructive criticism). There's only a problem there if you go looking for it. Publicly humiliating him? Definitely not.

So you didn’t see the reaction on social media then?

Was it beating about the bush though? Honest, because he played him despite his training or have I missed something?

An over reaction on social media? I can't say i'm surprised. Most of our fan base are idiots, it's hardly an accurate marker for what's right and wrong. Funnily enough, there was no such reaction when McCall was manager and made similar remarks. I have no idea why.

The manager thought he hadn't shown enough in training which is why he was limited to the amount of game time he had. I do however think he has a lot of potential and should have played more under both managers but hey ho. He needs to knuckle down for next season now.

I agree he needs to listen to what people with experience say. He has ability but if he doesn’t show the right attitude in training he won’t get picked

The kid looks like he could be good but exactly how many first team goals did he score, how many assists did he provide?
If he is not showing it in training and hasn't provided the goods in real game time he needs to accept that he needs to step up somewhere.
I think there is a player in there but he has to give the manager a reason to pick him and that starts on the training pitch.

But Gibson has dismissed the criticism completely and suggested it was a weak argument from
Grayson as to why he hadn’t played him more.

He even claims some of the senior players confirmed he had trained well and not to take the criticism to heart.
