The club was heavily criticised for this windows activity. And perhaps the tardiness deserved some. However we signed Guy who has been terrific for us Warnock who also is doing well Kai who was crucified on here getting better every match and Lund contributing as well. On reflection we strengthened well in January

fairs fair - Guy is proving a good addition to the squad, we knew what Warnock would bring and he's performing well.

however, Lund, his goal the other week aside hasn't done a great deal, and Kai is rubbish, but he does run around a lot.

and to be fair the criticism mostly was because the business was hasty and too late, not because the additions we did get were crap.

I think you are being unfair to Kai he won just about every header last night he is quick and better on the ball than I expected. Wins a lot of fouls for us as well.

You're just masking over the fundamental issue once again and focusing on Guy and Warnock as the successes doesn't make amends for the underlying issue. You're just glossing over the main problem.

The main problem which got us into the recent mess was last summer's recruitment. It left us with a small squad, without much depth, without cover in certain key areas and reliant upon untried, untested, inexperienced youngsters. Whilst the squad was more than adequate for several months combined with a large dollop of luck in some key games, once illnesses, injuries, loss of form, tiredness kicked in, we didn't have the backup quality to provide the cover. It was a poor strategy created by all three members of our recruitment committee and we were found out.

The reason their was a backlash was because they said they were prepared in the Summer, then come November they said they were prepared and said they could afford £500,000 bids for players such as Kieffer Moore.

We then ended up losing Luke Hendrie + Tony McMahon (the only senior RB's at the club) Wyke, Doyle, Poleon, Chicksen & Reeves were still out at this point. This then mean't young Hanson would play at RB, Guy would also play at RB after signing with the woeful Sattelmaier in the goals.

It took till the 24th of January for a major coup for City which was McGowan who looked superb until he was ruled out for the season. The signings of Warnock, Lund & Bruenker didn't signal warning signs to other promotion rivals - it probably spurred them to consolidate their play-off positions.

With Kilgallon getting sent off, Nicky Law getting injured, Reeves then ruled out of the remainder of the campaign, Wyke getting sent off, McGowan out for the season, Taylor leaving the club. - These didn't help the club neither.

Play off chasers Rotherham signed Caolan Lavery, Michael Smith & Matt Palmer.
Scunthorpe United signed Cameron McGeehan, Ivan Toney, Ryan Yates.
Charlton signed Michal Zyro from Wolves, Sullay Kaikai from Palace, Leon Best, Ajose came back from loan spell.

All the above would of walked in our starting 11 in January.

The damage was already done in January for City, February then didn't help things neither.

The fact is regardless what happened in the summer and what other clubs did and by the way Charlton sold their best player to fund their signings. We strengthened in January without a doubt and without a doubt if the players hadn’t in all intent and purposes gone in strike at Christmas we would have been up there

In a division such as this it doesn’t take a lot to be challenging for a play off spot. Shrewsbury have shown that with what is a workmanlike squad. Everyone unified as a tight unit, from the top down to the people washing the smalls. You get that sense of togetherness that pulls you through the tricky periods. Its clear we haven’t had any of this pretty since much straight after the playoff defeat. We don’t have the luxury of wage budget of the likes of Wigan or Blackburn, we never have since the BFG days or even before it. Our success has always been built on a strong team ethic and a will to win.
And because of this i think our manager, whoever he may be next season, has to have the final say on recruitment. We’ve tried a certain approach this season and its failed miserably. Let Grayson have full control and a budget he is happy with and we stand a chance. Its the only way out of this division.

As Dennis said the strategy was flawed from the summer, it could not be rectified in January. Taking risks with unproven young players and players with known problems like Taylor. If they learn lessons for next season then it will soon be forgotten. If the early signs are nothing has changed then its going to be a long long season.

January was a shambles from start to finish. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to give their head a shake.

Having started the season with a below par squad but with a decent first XI, we had a good start but for me it merely masked the longer term issue. And this isn't speaking with hindsight, several other posters shared this view at the time. I struggle to think of more than 3 games when I've left the match thinking that was a great performance. But I also recall thinking Lady Luck was on our side today and we were lucky to have got any points at all today let alone all three! And despite being in the top 6 for such a long time, it was those ill-deserved points which gave us a false position. Take away those 5 or 6 points and we would have been closer to mid table which imo better reflected the quality and make-up of our squad.

I really hope that the owners reflect on this season and what could have been and do something different this coming summer. If we can't learn from the lessons of this season, we'll repeat the same mistakes next season irrespective of who our manager is.

Precisely, Dennis. I (and a few others) stated long, long ago, that the January Window would allow us to sign one or two players to better the squad. In reality, however - The Window resulted in City having to seriously strengthen the squad. Which we failed to do sufficiently, might I add. The fact City needed more than two players in that window illustrates just how poor last Summer actually was.

It does seem like many of the players let themselves and the supporters down.
We had some decent players in the squad, just they didn't seem to be interested in their jobs

Your right with the additions in January we should at least be in the play offs. The players should really be ashamed at the end of the season because they let us down

I wasn’t referring to the players Park. I was referring to the process of bringing players in. The lads that did come in eventually have all made a contribution. I especially like the look of McGowan in the few games he played. Definitely a good player at this level and possible captain material if he’s here next season.

Guy yes been very good day one
Warnock was great last night by all accounts as i wasnt there but was crap at Blackpool and Blackburn.
Lund average at best not really improved us.
Kai give him a pre-season and he may do alright but needs to work on his touch.

So baring Guy we havent improved the squad at all. What we missed is another half decent goalscorer that was obvious since last August.

Nigel Clough was sat just behind us last night, maybe having a look at his two players (although Warnock has said he's retiring) and seeing the standard of football in league one.

You've missed a great opportunity here.

If only you'd said something on the lines of 'I've heard that Grayson won't be staying at VP after the end of the season but that the owners are looking at alternatives. They have suggested that potential candidates should visit VP and run their eyes over the squad. And last night I saw Nigel Clough here'. It will be on Twatter as a fact within the hour. Bingo! :)
