    In the early days of astronomy, Venus was the place in the solar system, beyond Earth, that most scientists thought was most likely to harbour life. As space exploration progressed, attention turned to Mars, then the moons of the outer planets and even exoplanets. After somewhat neglecting Venus in recent decades, it would be somewhat ironic if extraterrestial life was first discovered there.

    Whatever detail today's announcement reveals, you can be sure that Venus will shine very brightly tonight.
    Goddess on the mountain top
    Burning like a silver flame
    The summit of beauty and love
    And Venus was her name    ​
