Hospitality, Farming, Brexit, problems getting staff

Why would they want to come here when they are not welcome. You dont want them to be able to reside here you just want them for their labour. Why would they want to come here when they could work in europe? Without the hassle of the visa and feeling like an alien?

Youre just showing why after the facts are clear to see that you are in a cult.

 

This is the nub of the issue. We have chosen to leave the EU in order to stop EU citizens coming over here, without jobs, and sponging off our benefits system.
In reality, that was largely a myth. There's no evidence of widespread abuse of our benefits system by EU citizens from mainland Europe.

So, in order to solve a problem that never actually existed, we have created a much bigger problem - massive labour shortages that are at risk of crippling our hospitality and farming industries for years to come.
Improving visa processing would improve the situation a bit, but it's not going to get over the basic issue that putting obstacles in the way of free labour movement will deter many EU citizens from bothering to apply for seasonal work here.

So you thought the govt would do a good job of handling a complex process before you voted for brexit? You are a pensioner and you thought a british govt would handle immigration well? What planet have you been living on?

 

If you try join a union on zhc they wont fire you, you just stop getting asked to work. no chance. they've always been a bogus self employment abomination and i am functionally self employed by being on one. if I am off sick I dont get paid, I don't get holiday pay when I take days off etc etc. I would love to be in a union but anyone on a ZHC has no chance if they want to keep their job and thats half the reason shite like this exists in the first place.

because prior to brexit they could come whenever with no hassle. now the regulatory barriers in place make it prohibitive on both sides to employ people from the EU. I also know a couple of people who weren't allowed to stay because this sort of work is considered unskilled. it is simply no longer worth the hassle for both parties, hence why we now have massive labour shortages, if it was easy things would have just continued as before.

Have you asked each and every one of them what their immigration status is Broncs or its impossible to say how they are allowed to work here.

 

Not sure what my age has to do with it, wether I though they would do a good job or otherwise they were the only party a leaver like myself could vote for, its not that difficult to grasp..

 

Why would I do that, they are obviously foreign workers who are happy to work in the UK in hospitality just as you are.

Have you given any thought into getting into a different vocation, or as you get higher in your job does your status change from a ZHC to permanent position.

 

Im not a foreign worker though broncs. Because their might be something i.e british parentage etc that means they can stay and work here and not have to go through the crap other EU nationals do.

I like my job, and I earn enough money that I generally only need to work 4 days a week to afford my own place. I earn more on the side from DJing (20-30 pph) which I couldnt do if i worked somewhere where I had to work 5 days a week.

There are only 3 positions higher than what I do in our company as it's an independent, family run business. I would love to be on salary and have asked for it before but my job has enough positives in my mind to make the trade off worth it. Im also well aware of just how unrepresentative the deal i get is as in my last bar role down here i was on bog standard minimum wage as is the tendency with hospitality work, and also again zhc.

 

You may be correct they could be foreign worker who have decided to remain in the UK after we left the EU.
Glad your happy in your job, job satisfaction is sometimes better than a large salary but hating the job.

 

No matter how you spin it free movement of EU workers to the UK depressed wages especially for lower skilled and lower paid. It may take a little time but lower paid will benefit as wages in general improve and rogue employers who exploit them go out of business

 

Total wishful thinking. These are not just small numbers of 'rogue employers' paying low wages. Whole swathes of the British economy only remain viable on low wages. Supermarkets continue to force down the prices they pay to farmers. How are those farmers supposed to afford to pay higher wages to workers when the price they get for their crops, milk etc keeps getting squeezed by the supermarkets?
Pubs, restaurants, hotels etc are struggling to survive as it is. If they pay higher wages they'll go bust in droves.
Thousands of care homes are hanging on by the skin of their teeth; raised wages will either force them out of business or increase the cost of care beyond the means of ordinary people.

How are British companies that are reeling under the weight of (previously unnecessary) import and export paperwork supposed to pay higher wages when their imported raw materials are costing more and export sales markets are contracting significantly?

You can't sustain high wages in a moribund economy. A high wage economy only works if you've got a booming economy where the majority of people have enough money to afford the higher priced goods and services that will inevitably follow.

What exactly is going to transform this situation into positivity? All the forecasts are for low or negative growth, inflation possibly as high as 15% and our trade volume with Europe continuing to contract.
