Without those wins we'd already be down.
Hindsight as you say is wonderful - but the bigger mistake was keeping Payne. I said at the time that him staying was a boost - but only of it didn't impede our other business, which it clearly did. The 10-12 grand we're paying him would've been far better off spent on 3-4 players to strengthen the team. A proper CB, left back, left winger and striker. Our position in January was salvageable but we completely ballsed that window up.

However agree with @simons (woking bantam) to the extent that Decembers run of form meant many of us got way too carried away, and I wonder if some of the players and management did? But @Faithful Bantam is also right, without those points we would be down already.
One thing is sure, where we finish this season won’t be defined on the above. It’s been on a number of failures and poornclub leadership from the beginning.Stop hovering to collapse... Hindsights wonderful but the failure of this season came before pre season started. Buying players without a manager and then appointing a trio of woeful managers (maybe decent coaches but not managers) under a deluded chairmen set the standard.
HopkinS failure came in around Oct/Nov when he said we'd have players in for the NYD game. He put a nail in his coffin at that point and then we waited for all of Jan to scramble for players right at the death. His Jan signings, so far, have been very poor with only Butterfield looking good in a handful of games. He was out of his depth and did the right thing and walked.

We did not need hindsight to know what was needed in the January window, Most fans were desperate for the window to open and most knew we needed at least an experienced centre back ( or 2 ), A centre forward and a winger, This was the minimum we needed to compete and try and escape relegation, What we got was entirely different because a poor manager ignored what we needed and brought in 3 midfielders to add to the many we already had, That is not hindsight it is pure stupidity

I like his style of football, he did a very good job at Blackpool, getting them promoted out of the 4th tier at the first attempt. I believe he did a decent job at Blackburn too.
Dont want to start looking for a new manager again in the summer either. I wish he had been given a longer contract, and I still dont understand why he wasntMorley Bantam, Chrisako, Onside and 2 others like this. -
Jack Payne has 9 goals and 5 assits this season. He has contributed to a third of all our league goals. He should be playing.

To be fair to Hopkin most of us were pleased when Payne was secured - but at the time I dont think many realised this was going to be totally in place of the other positions we so obviously needed strengtheningThe Evidence, RonnieBrown, Onside and 1 other person like this. -
A joy to watch, but too costly, brought in by an ‘Owner who Knew Football’, perhaps a ‘luxury’ player, who with ten other very strong players could flourish.
Will he also be part of a team which was relegated, because the recruitment and dramatic tinkering with a team which had evolved, was too much?
Seems to me that there are a lot of comparisons.Interested Bystander, Faithful Bantam, hippo and 1 other person like this. -

We had talked about this at half time with a number of friends and the agreement was around the 70th minute, when their defence would start to be tiring.
Instead we get Patrick, who had a very indifferent spell at Yeovil (not even Miller).
We could have got a draw on Tuesday especially as the game progressed and we had more of the ball in the second half.Edinmiarse, Craven Cottager, Fordy117 and 1 other person like this. -

I think every fan was delighted to secure Payne, however, I'm sure most wouldnt have wanted that to the detriment of bringing much needed other players in key positions where everyone knows where we are very weak.
It was a very poor January window, despite noises from Hopkin that we were ready to bring in much needed better players.Dubois, RonnieBrown and marshy77 like this. -

Ah....not sure where to start;
Firstly agree with Fordy, not keeping J’O’B was a massive mistake, would now rather have him than Payne. However I along with most fans agreed at the time that keeping Payne was essential in our rise up the table. Oh how wrong we all were!!
For reasons we will never know Hopkin appeared to be obsessed with players who fit the number ten mold. We have no backbone no desire, no will to win, December masked the fact that we have a team of talented “snowflakes”
Ps......comparisons of Beni & Payne Carbone = The best technical player ever to pull on a city shirt, and for those who think he was a luxury player, he ran himself into the ground, threw himself into tackles, see if you can find the footage of him nose to nose with Stuart Pearce!! The little Italian was different class
