    He’s got one year left on his contract now. It’s easy to release them if they agree, all you need to do is agree how much of the outstanding value of their contract you’re going to pay them. If they stay, whether they play or not you’re paying them 100% of the value of their contract. By agreeing to pay out say 75% the club saves a few quid and the player gets a chance to get games somewhere else. If the player is told he’s no chance of playing, then he needs to balance up what he wants to do, a year kicking his heels or move on.

    My apologies. The comment was about Scannell crossing for Donaldson to head home and I said you have discounted both already ;meaning Scannell crossing) and Doyle.

    I agree you haven’t questioned Donaldson but he can’t score from a Scannell cross, if the latter is ‘coasting’.

    I thought Riley was tidy and burst forward with pace and control. However I also thought Gibson looked good, some nice tight control, pace and some good slick passing, he even had a very hopeful shot from distance which could have gone in if the keeper hadn’t got down to it. What was different from before, was that he kept it up a good display for virtually all the forty five minutes he was on. In respect of him and Riley, then maybe just maybe, there is enough maturity and ability to push on.
    However I thought Patrick was like Bambi on Ice, poor first touch, struggled to lose his markers and the ‘assist’ flattered his overall performance. My view is that he needs to go out on loan, as one last shake of the dice. Probably two levels down.
