    That is disappointing because if he cannot see the problem he is unlikely to be able to solve it. This team will not get out of this division with Gilleard playing

    Exactly. Hughes continues to select them as a defensive midfield and yes said he rates them in that role. Why 2 midfielders are required to protect the defence defeats me! But as the away team, in fairness, the tactics are working reasonably well. It's at home where changes are required. In one sense, at VP, the Smallwood/Gilly pairing isn't the problem; it's a symptom of a deeper problem.

    We can only assume that Smallwood & Gilly are working to Hughes's instructions. It's his squad. He's responsible for team selection, the formation, the tactics, the gameplan, the preparation etc and I suspect if he wasn't happy with the Gilly/Smallwood contribution to all of that, he would come up with a different plan particularly at home. But he doesn't. Maybe he doesn't regard the poor home results as a problem ... but many do!

    Hughes needs to change his approach at home imo... and quickly. If he doesn't, results at home are unlikely to improve. In which case, I'm not optimistic that we'll be in the auto spots this season.

    I think MH publicly backing the duo is a step in the right direction.
    He's not going to come out and say they're not cutting it even if that is what he thinks.
    I can't believe MH & GH can't see we need more attacking drive from midfield.
    Public support or not I expect incoming.

    Sorry, but, did you expect him to go to a newspaper and say they're a load of rubbish?

    If they are still our starting pair at the end of January then I'll be demused by Hughes but I'm confident we'll see one or two coming in in midfield

    I was a little bit disappointed by Mark Hughes' defence of Gilliead and Smallwood.

    However, I can accept that if the front four were all scoring, their performance would actually seem acceptable.

    The back six (which I think is overkill) aren't that bad unless we're getting completely overrun by better-rounded teams like the last two games; but most of the front four have looked ordinary in recent games, and part of me wonders if we can do better in those positions OR whether our back six can do better in terms of supporting them going forward.

    It's probably a little from Column A, and a little from Column B.

    Hopefully we sign a couple more goalscorers in the January window, and no, they don't have to directly replace Cook.

    We definitely need to bring in a more experienced scapegoat in the January window. We haven't had a quality scapegoat since AOC left

    Spot on, we have at least three more games with this pairing in central midfield, they are really going to put the effort in , if the manager comes out in the press saying they are shite

    It's lazy journalism from the T&A . The quotes are lifted from Jamie Raynor's interview with Mark Hughes at last Friday's pre match press conference. You don't expect Simon Parker to raise the subject of the defensive midfielders do you?

    Gillead is one of the North East lads who convinced the club to get them a mini bus to travel down together to training and matches. No doubt he’s one of the lads and gets on really well with Cook and the other NE lads, inc Smallwood, so maybe he’s picked for what he offers to the Group from that point of view and because he’s very close to Smallwood.

    We need more drive though. Whether the player himself or Sparky initiates it

    I’m fine with him being part of the squad and good for camaraderie (not Danny) but I’d rather he wasn’t in the starting 11
