I thought at times he was deliberately running into heavy traffic to try to win penalties.

It was like a boxing match between 2 middleweights who spent most of it sparring, until one actually landed a shot. A poor watch in terms of entertainment, but Southgate has obviously decided that the most likely chance of success comes from keeping it tight and hoping we can nick the odd goal.

Maybe and at times that isn’t a bad tactic but Only if there isn’t any other ball on. If his choice is to just hold the ball up and hope others create a possible ball for him or run at the defenders and try and get something then that’s fine, when there is a good pass on though he has to take it rather than go for the low percentage play

But when he has committed a couple of players and he has the WB free outside him who can exploit the space he has created by committing those players then you have to take it. Both the goals came from committing players to give a player out wide space but until the first goal, Stirling pretty much refused the pass. In fact he became less 'greedy' when he was switched to the side of the pitch he doesn't like playing on

Sure. I'm not saying that he shouldn't make the pass. But when you're in crowded traffic, trying to commit defenders and keep control of the ball it's not easy to get your head up and pick the killer pass.
I think we have to accept that what you get with Stirling is a quick, skilful player who can beat players and also poach close range goals, but who doesn't always see the bigger picture. Even accepting that limitation he's been our most dangerous and effective attacker this tournament. I can forgive his occasional blind spots if he keeps scoring a goal every game. Whatever you may think of him, you can bet that opposing coaches are racking their brains trying to work out how to counter the threats he poses.
