On paper, he has done a decent job. But the reality is, the players had taken him as far as they could and he was becoming a hindrance. His negative outlook when we were leading/level has pretty much cost us 2 Euro Finals. Time to go.......

If they are going English, Im taking Eddie Howe. How many managers have won promotion from League Two to the Premier League. He also did a decent job getting Newcastle into the Champions League. If we are open to a foreign manager then there are better options.

First conversations I would be having.....

Ramsdale - find a new club son or you are out
Branthwaite - get ready to be Jon Stones long term replacement
White/Tomori - welcome back to the fold lads
Kane - You are squad captain but we are going in a new direction for team captain.
Walker/Trippier/Maguire/Henderson - thanks for your service lads

I think it is a travesty, personally, that the FA haven't done more to talk him out of resigning (although they might have done for all I know)

No manager since Venables has gained as much respect from a group of players than Southgate. We have tried the foreign manager route a couple of times and achieved absolutely shit all with very talented squads. English players relate better to English managers, the proof is in the pudding

Can't help thinking this is a massive backwards step following 8 years of progression, despite being unable to win a major trophy in that time

I think he has done a very good job in building England h and rescuing us from the deep hole we had fallen into. His man management skills are very good. As a strategist not so good. Time to move on. We made several mistakes with foreign managers ie They must speak English and be acquainted with football culture in England. They must have managed in the PL. Let see where we go from here. I wouldn’t mind Klopp tbh. Don’t know a great deal about Howe but his CV looks fantastic.

As I've said elsewhere I think Klopp would be a train wreck. In international management you can't have a too specific style because you don't have the time with the players to implement it. Klopp needs like 6-12months of daily drilling his players into his gegenpress style so they are both ready for it both mentally and physically. It's no good having the players for a few weeks, drilling them hard only for them to go back to their club and play in a different way with a different required intensity. Just look at how many muscle injuries Liverpool had in his first season or so and how common it is for his new signings to have muscle injury issues in their first season.

Mind you he would be better than 2 of the names that are being floated, Gerrard and Lampard. Both have shown they are absolute failures as managers

Howe would be a better bet simply because he doesn't have such a distinct style, he is more functional who will adapt based on what he has available

Marco Bielsa hasn't needed all that time in charge of Uruguay to seriously turn them into a force.

Are you sure there isn't any bias on your part with the opinion on Klopp?

Howe would be the obvious choice I think. Failing that maybe promote Carsley from the U21's as I think they've done well under him?

I think the time is right. I don't you could see there was a better team in that England squad than what was sent out to play.

Southgate was literally 30 seconds away from being dumped in the same fashion as Hodgson had we lost to Slovakia in the last 16.

For all the talent England have, we played in the most part this Euros as if Mark Hughes was at the helm. Slow backwards and sideways football and trying to defend narrow margins against teams we should be beating comfortably. We scored 8 goals in 7 games against the likes of Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, Slovakia, etc. Kane didn't look fit and yet started every game, Palmer made a difference whenever he came on and was dropped back to the bench for the next game.

Spain were by far the best team in the tournament but we ended up as you would expect a Southgate or Hughes side to end up, trying to defend a draw having had the opponents on the ropes when getting back into the game.

I'd be open to Eddie Howe becoming manager if we have to go down the English route, absolutely no way should Lampard or Gerrard be mentioned at all. Look at how Villa qualified for the champions league within 18 months of Gerrard getting the boot after staring relegation in the face.

Gareth has been a steady hand, but if you want to win trophies you need to be ruthless and Southgate doesn't have that in him. Reactive rather than Proactive.

That is much more applicable to the majority of managers before him, particularly Capello & Eriksson. At least Southgate delivered us 2 finals and a World Cup semi final

That is the problem, we were so bad under Capello and Ericsson that any improvement is seen as a positive. He has restored the England team but has taken us as far as he can, we now need a new manager to take us to the next level.

I think it will be Howe it's just when? Do we try early and see if Newcastle think there's time to get someone in before the season? Or do we wait. Wouldn't at all be surprised to see Carsley take over for the September friendlies.

Seen sky sports say will Carsley have a chance as he will have worked with the young players before? Clearly done little homework on the squad, as theres only really Palmer, Guehi, Gordon & Gallagher who worked under him for notable spells in the U21s. All the other lads under or around 25 haven't worked with him before like Rice, Saka, Trent, Bellingham, Mainoo & Eze. Wharton had 1 U21 cap. Branthwaite and Colwill who missed out hand small amounts of time too. So it's not like you'd be bringing in someone with knowledge or the team or with loads of experience of our key players, they all skipped the U21s and went straight to Gareths hands.
