As the opening game looms on the horizon it will be fascinating to see which formation we adopt in the first few games. The pre-season games suggest we'll go with a 4-2-3-1, in which case the starting team on Saturday might well be

    O'Donnell
    Mellor O'Connor Kilgallon Riley
    Akpan Wright
    Scannell (if fit) Payne Seedorf
    Doyle.

But suppose we manage to land another decent striker, say Billy Sharp.
That would mean having two up top so the formation would have to accommodate that.
If we were to play 3-5-2 at some point how would that work?
Presumably we'd have a back three of McGowan O'Connor and Kilgallon,
but who would be the wing backs? Could Seedorf and Scannell fill those positions? I'd say probably not, so are we prepared to go into a game without them?

The other option would be a straight 4-4-2 in which case, assuming we play two wingers in Seedorf and Scannell, one of Akpan, Wright or Payne would have to drop out. Or can one of them play wide?

And all these formations seem to leave out Chicksen, NKP, Wood, Isherwood, Reeves, Devine, Miller, Brunker and Gibson.

You've left out Robinson as well, who may well start on Saturday if things have to be moved around due to Scannell's possible injury.

If Chicksen wasn't seen as first choice left back then we'd have sacked him off and replaced him. There's no way that Riley (a right footed, right back with barely 90 minutes league experience) is going to be played out of position ahead of a fit Chicksen at left back.

People go on about Riley being right footed at left back but remember Lee Todd exactly the same and he didn't look out of place.

Given all the options we have, this could be either a beautiful Italian mosaic, or just a Cabbage Patch doll.
One will be admired, whilst the other will be derided.
    Interesting times, ahead. :)

Maldini was reasonable at left back he was right footed. Plus didn't Riley spend much of his time at Man U playing on the left, or was that the point and it's done a woooosh on me?

Good to see you've used a seasoned international as your example.

    Well done.

Yes that was the point a right footed player can play left back as Lee Todd did. Even Ashley young who can use both feet is really right footed but does a decent job as a left back.

Right footed players seem to adapt far better to playing on the left than left footers do to playing on the right. Beagrie was right footed

I think it's probably more the case of there being far more right footed players than left footed ones which means that it's more common for right footed players to have to play on the left.

Salah is quite good on the right as a left footed player. A lot of the top teams now put left footed wingers on the right and right footed wingers on the left. It means the player can get a better shot at goal with their stronger foot.

On the subject of right footed left backs, Denis Irwin was quite good at that role. As already mentioned, Ashley Young seems to be doing well at this too, but you can see that it’s sometimes a disadvantage that he is so very right footed when playing as a left back.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is that if we were to play all 4 of Riley, O’Connor, McGowan and Mellor in defence, we’d have a fully right footed back 4. I don’t know whether it would be a disadvantage having 2 defenders playing on the side intended for left footed players or whether this might be the strongest option from the players available.
