but is the financial state of Bradford City known and if so what is it?
I have barely looked on here this season but viewed it a lot last season as I'd backed you ante-post under Bowyer. I couldn't believe your club then turned once again to Stuart McCall. I appreciate the man is a legend as a player but how often does he need to prove he's not a manager?
The one constant over the last couple of years seems to be the unpopularity of your Chairman, Mr Rupp. Has he put a lot of money into the club? Is he very wealthy? Is he willing and able to invest considerable funds (£1,000,000 p.a.) to bring in an outstanding management team?
This isn't idle curiosity. Bradford City is a big club that should be more than capable of reaching and remaining in The Championship. But that depends on substantial investment from either Mr Rupp or new owners. That you should be near the foot of the fourth division is a disgrace.

Without saying it plainly the owner seems to have now gone down the route of the club must be self sustainable and it doesn’t seem like he wants to spend anything above and beyond.
He brought in Julian Rhodes after our fall out with the old mad German CEO and he has basically looked at it like an administrator and granted sounds to have sorted some mess behind the scenes but is now running it at a bare minimum.
We have no real background team, a young CEO now promoted from within and as you says McCall who is never a manager.

it’s easy to run it in the black now we have a salary cap as they can blame that for the lack of major spending but the rest of the club aside from the playing squad looks to be run down too.

in short no i don’t think he would and that’s why McCall got another year last week despite showing he’s taking the club backwards.

by the way think you’ve made a strange choice with manager at your place. Obviously we are biased with parky but he would have got you out of that league. It’s not pretty but it was never going to be. Much like under Ross. Turgid at times but he gets the job done when given time.

Target is 22nd place, absolute austerity being the method by which such a feat should be achieved.

    I'll sum it up simply.

feck off Rupp, you're destroying the club.

Thank you for your reply and to the others who've replied. It appears that avoiding the drop this season is your only target. I hope you reach it. I'm old enough to remember when there were two reasonably well supported Bradford clubs in The Football League. That there should be even a remote chance of there being none is a very sorry state of affairs. Sadly I always get the impression that too many football supporters in Bradford support clubs from outside the city. Such a big city as Bradford should have a big club.

I could not agree with you more regarding Lee Johnson. There were some really good managers available this time but we've appointed a bit of a charlatan in my opinion. Parkinson should never have been given the Sunderland job. I know he did well with you and had promotions elsewhere but he was the choice of no Sunderland supporter, only of our dreadful owners. He was on a bit of a hiding to nothing from the start and his rather dull persona did him no favours. Actually it was the disappointment of both who we have appointed and who we could have appointed but didn't that made me start this thread. I was really excited (even at my age) at the prospect we might be going to appoint the Cowley brothers. I feel like I nearly had a date with Sophia Loren and I'm stuck in the back row with Dandy Nichols. If Bradford City had money they'd have been a marvellous appointment for you. You are easily the biggest club in League Two. I remember when Peter Taylor (a manager I have never had a high opinion of) got the Hull job at the perfect time and led them to back to back promotions. New owners, new stadium, new money and at their nadir. That for me is a dream job, taking a big club at its lowest point with money. Bradford City have two out of three but (to paraphrase Meatloaf) two out of three ain't any good at all. I hope you get the third part before too long.

    Good Luck to you.

On the Peter Taylor one we had him here for a spell and he was always ok. Another one who loved a 1-0 and didn’t know how to do much otherwise. You were right though, amazing for Hull and a good manager in his day.

As for us my dream would be big Sam who wants a project but we have zero chance of it. He’d want too much and would need backing but he’d be so good for our club and drag it into the 21st century kicking and screaming. He’d sort out the science side, the data the recruitment and the players on the pitch and would attract players. If I was chairman I’d say to him here’s a 3 year deal to start but I want you to move upstairs at the end of it all and be head of football. Rupp the owner has enough money to back something like that. Yes would be a big outlay at this time but imagine where the club would be with 25k a week in the championship? I am certain he would deliver it. I know I am completely delusional and dreaming but aim high eh?

as for Sunderland without de railing this thread too much felt big Sam or Nigel Pearson be a good fit for you with your squad? suits their game style
I always try and have a quick look at your forum but it’s so popular it’s hard to keep up these days. I get your point on Parky. We were happy to be doing well in league one whereas I know you’re desperate to get out. But just look at the teams who do well in that league? All physical all big units and good at the back first and foremost. Look at the promoted sides down the years and most to that route. It’s not a pretty league and so hard to get out of.

but I do want Sunderland to do well. Not sure why but always had a soft spot for you.

During the Parky years we had a policy of 'managed deficits' propped up by sell ons and improbable cup runs.
Every last penny was pumped into the playing budget, while the club's infrastructure and off field setup were neglected.
I think, to an extent, the chickens have come home to roost.
At least Parky had some leverage after the success of 2013 and made sure his back room staff were 'looked after' when negotiating a contract extension. His fitness guy, Nick Allamby, was instrumental in Parky's success here.
Parky instilled a culture of professionalism which at odds with how the club was run off the field.

I remember administrative feck ups which lead to a hefty Fifa fine on one occasion and being kicked out of the FA Cup on another (although later reinstated on appeal).
Then we had the pitchgate and ticketgate fiascos.
If you could imagine a sitcom about an ineptly run football club, it would be us.
We were run like a working mans club with inexperienced volunteers in key roles.
And various other hangers on and idiots wading in here and there.

The German takeover was initially greeted with optimism.
Many thought it would provide the investment and restructuring the club was crying out for.
Unfortunately Parky was poached by Bolton.
But the return of SMc, with the promise of fresh investment, galvanised the fans.
We strengthened the squad with decent players like Vincelot and Dieng.
We started the season well and brought in Charlie Wyke and Alex Jones in a uncharacteristically good January window.
We finished in the playoffs and narrowly lost to Millwall in the final.

We started the following season well but cracks were beginning to show.
Rumours of tension between CEO Rahic and McCall were circulating, with Rahic allegedly signing unproven players behind his back and interfering in team selection.
The infamous 'matter of heart' documentary where an angry Rahic was throwing his weight around, also alleging some club staff were 'on the take' created discontent amongst the fans.
The tipping point was the Yeovil Cup game, with rumours of a massive bust up and Rahic refusing to sanction a loan extension for Luke Hendry which angered McCall.
We lost, and to rub salt into the wound, we missed out on a lucrative cup tie with Man Utd, for which Rahic blamed McCall.
Six defeats later McCall was sacked.
We bought in Grayson, but he failed to turn us around.
He was offered a new 2yr contract but turned us down citing poor training facilities.

That summer Rahic promoted youth coach Michael Collins to 'head coach.
Rahic splashed out on big names like Eoin Doyle from Preston Joe Riley from Man U. As well as players like Josh Wright.
After a poor start, Collins was sacked and Rahic bought in David Hopkin.

Rumours that majority owner Rupp had grown tired of Rahic and wanted him out proved correct when, shortly after, Rahic's tenure came to an end and he was forced out.
Former owner Julian Rhodes was bought in by Rupp to 'steady the ship'
The fans were happy and the team had a surge in form, with Hopkin winning 'Manager of the month' for December.
But the optimism was short lived as form collapsed and yet more rumours of bust ups and poor moral within the squad emerged. Hopkin resigned shortly after.

Gary Bowyer was bought in but failed to stave off relegation.
Despite this, he was offered a new contract.
However, he was denied funding for his own No2, instead opting to promote another youth coach, Martin Drury to the role.

He was given a healthy playing budget for league 2 and we bought in marquee signings James Vaughan and Clayton Donaldson. We loaned out Doyle to rivals Swindon.
We started well, hovering around the autos until christmas.
But a dip in form and a rumoured bust up with Vaughan put Bowyer under pressure.
Fans were also calling for Doyle to be recalled because he was scoring for fun at Swindon. The club duly obliged.
But the poor form defensive tactics continued.
Vaughan was loaned out and a unhappy Doyle went back to Swindon for an undisclosed fee.
Bowyer's position became untenable and he was sacked shortly after.

Rhodes brought back McCall for a third time. Despite a couple of encouraging performances, results failed to improve.
Then covid happened. We narrowly missed out on the playoffs on a points per game basis.

Despite having more time to plan, the summer proved disappointing in terms of recruitment.
We released Vaughan from his contract, but failed to find a replacement.
We re signed previously released players like Billy Clarke and Dylan Motley Henry.
The only encouraging signings were midfielders Callum Cooke and Elliot Watt.
Yet, McCall declared he was 'happy with the squad'

Now we're in the bottom 2, having just lost to a a team of Bradford City rejects.

That's an excellent summary. That is what has happened in a nutshell.

I don't think Parkinson left because he was 'poached', however, I think he realised he would no longer be able to run the club the way he had before, and that there would be interference in a system that was working perfectly well. I 100% support Phil in leaving Bradford City, and would have done the same were I in his shoes, even as a Bradford City fan.

I will say that my wife bought me the Matter of Heart DVD for Christmas that year, and while she did so out of love, I have never watched it and I never will. I have never commented on the contents of that DVD, nor will I. I own it, know where it is, but thanked her for the gift at the time and entirely dismissed the idea of watching it.

It's very sad to see that we are nowhere near recovering from that awful period, even though we should be IN THE VERY LEAST, and I'm extremely disappointed with happenings at the club and more so with those involved that claim they have the club at heart. Passivity is no excuse for failure, I'm afraid.

Have a watch guys there is a part where Rupp makes a comment with regards Hanson going to Sheffield United and bringing Charlie Wyke to City saying "we would never sell a player without cover" he was as good as his word back then shame he's not with regards James Vaughan.
