Their new ground is just waiting a start date for construction, everything has been given the green light by the EFL for them to build the very first completely timber stadium, named Eco Park.

Everything is going to be made from sustainable goods, 5000 seater stadium (they literally need the entire town of Nailsworth attending to fill it) with nearly 2000 parking spots with vast amounts of electric car charging bays and electric bike charging bays available. The owner is plunging a lot of cash into the FGR project, cant see him doing a runner anytime soon. But during Covid, the average price of timber has shot up by around 15%, so the stadium just became way more expensive than he initially planned.

I know the EFL blocked one of his ideas, he wanted to make the food and drink available i the new ground completely plant based but they said there has to be something on all menus for all fans.

    Unfortunately, not. - https://www.fgr.co.uk/eco-park

Almost entirely wood, from a video Dale Vince did a few years back when the plan was announced, the only none wooden bits would be things needed for electrical parts, but might have changed since.

Love the mock up of the stadium clearly drawn by a guy who isn't a football fan. Showing a game taking place with more fans stood outside the ground than actually sat watching the game in the stadium.

I guess the difference is that, unlike VP in 1985, the new FGR stadium will be completely no smoking and won't be littered with decades of combustible rubbish under the terracing.

It will also be fully treated and the timber will be fireproof.

I'm not sure why some people think this would get past the planning stage otherwise?

Fire proof wood. Do they buy that at the same shop as a chocolate teapot

Lets hope it is not the planners who gave the go ahead for thousands of unsafe flats with no or little fire protection,

Clearly not. Timber can be treated however, to permit sufficient time to escape, which is part and parcel of any risk assessment mitigation .

Some hard woods are difficult to burn on their own, but damned expensive.

So much for the environment. How many trees will be chopped down for this vanity project?

Good point. Not only that but it will be expensive hardwood, probably naturally grown rather than commercially like cheap pine. Bang, there goes a bit more of the amazon.

I'm sure there are many more environmentally friendly building materials than wood.

This will be their second new ground in 20 years. That's a lot of diesel delivery wagons.

    https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/opinion/zaha-hadid-architects-why-our-all-wood-forest-green-stadium-wont-be-a-fire-risk

"In this case, the timber is engineered to be oversized so it can create a sacrificial layer which will char and maintain its structural integrity. The size of these oversized timber sections makes it difficult for them to ignite but, as the timber will be left exposed, a fire retardant will be impregnated in its surface to stop any surface spread of flame."

They will be using cross-laminated engineered timber that isn't a naturally occurring timber at all, it's layers and layers bonded together and prefabricated. They use 'Glulam' for the massive beams as it's three times stronger than steel P4P, and about 80% lighter. Again, it's many layers glued together so that if one layer burns off, the layer behind it is not burning. This timber doesn't 'burn through' like normal timber.

But the design of the stadium is another reason it's not a fire risk. Read up on it.

But if you're thinking they're going to chop down a tree, cut it to shape and build a stadium, you're way off the mark.

So no, it won't be expensive hardwood, and it won't take any more transporting than steel or concrete which use far more CO2 during protection. I'm not really sure what your point is.

Nobody smokes in football stadiums anymore, that's probably why they got the go ahead

    Really?
I think what you mean is that nobody is SUPPOSED to smoke in football stadiums anymore.
