In the absence of anything meaningful to discus at the moment, and the fact that we will turn the clocks back by an hour on the 28th October, how are we as a Club addressing the renewable energy question... There you go my first contribution to the Bantam Talk Community.... My guess is Ill get less than ten responses......

They're unfortunately hoping to burn the shit that gets laid out on the field each Saturday in order to power them on the cheap

The large expanse of flat roof space available would suggest that solar power would be the most sensible option to look at.

The main stand and the NW corner are probably not that viable due to the shadows cast by the roof supports but the office block, TL Dallas stand, front of the Kop and a good chunk of the Midland Rd stand would potentially be suitable on the assumption that the roofs can support the additional weight.

Edins up the crane this morning changing all the bulbs to Phillips energy savers. He doesn’t need no electrician

Similar situation to safe standing who would pay for the installation of solar panels, and of course as you say would the roof take the weight of the panels.

Yes but this more urgent, we all have to do our bit to help with climate change. Maybe the roof could be reinforced to take the weight. There will be grants around to enable businesses to go green. It would be forward thinking to get an assessment of how much energy we use and therefore the most appropriate green energy we need, both at VP and the training ground.

Some fag packet calculations based on a quick Google etc...

    Office block roof = 200 sq m
    TL Dallas roof = 500 sq m
    Midland Rd roof = 1000 sq m
    Kop roof = 8000 sq m
    Total space available = 2500 sq m (0.61 acres)

7 sq m generates about 1kW so maximum power output would be in the region of 357kW

Installation cost, taking a massive punt and going for mid way between residential and industrial costs would be £750k.

Average daylight hours in Bradford is 12.25 hours per day which equals 4475 hours per year of which 1250 is direct sunlight. Based on 100% efficiency in sun and 40% efficiency in daylight the returns on the current feed in tariff of 5.24p/kWh would be:

Office block roof = £3802 per year
TL Dallas roof = £9505 per year
Midland Rd roof = £19010 per year
Kop roof = £15208 per year
    Total = £47526 per year

That gives a return of about 6% a year on the investment so we'd be in profit after 16 years.

Good effort @Fuzzy@Fuzzy, my concern is £750k could get us 2/3 quality players, back to the old pitch Vs players argument.

I think Edin's got it wrong again.....the pitch "was" a natural reservoir and could of sold the water to local industry but that's gone down the swanny, like the team.

Depending on how much we use, we could offset other costs with money we save. Yes the initial outlay is considerable, but an investment like this would just carry on giving well after we have paid our initial investment. We all have to think about our footprint on the earth. We have literally 12 years to lower the greenhouse gases before it is completely irreversible.

No thanks, complete waste of money at our level. If the government are unhappy with our energy consumption then thay can give us and every other lower league club a grant to pay for them. They can always use that money that the FA will probably get for Wembley. Cash is tight as it is, they'd only be a youth team left if some of our fans got their way with off field expenditure.

I sent an email asking what the club was doing to take advantage of the new Canal Rd cycling route, I was taking the piss a bit, but never got a reply. Could have a spinning class, getting all our fatso supporters to power the flood lights whilst watching the game, win/win for everybody.:)

Solar? A 16 year payback time, if the figures are correct, is not an attractive proposition for a skint 3rd division football club. £750k is huge initial outlay, for a potential return of a paltry £47k per annum a long time in the future......

I love reading about Forest Green Rovers, having rich chairman helps but also a rich and imaginative one.

German owners but nothing has changed, our tag line should be "We're backward, we're Bratdfud".

Fuzzy's calculation had it roughly 16 year to pay back, Im not sure that sort if time span would appeal to many.

I think there are a few problems with this admirable idea.

    • It is not our stadium. I assume that agreement would be needed by the Gibbs (personal) Pension Fund, for structural alterations to the stadium.
    • The current contract for the lease of Valley Parade is due to expire in 10 years. There is no guarantee that City will remain at the ground. If there is a potential to generate (sic) income from the actual stadium, then the Pension Fund could seek to increase the rent on that basis.
    • As has been said by other posters, the money could perhaps be spent on other projects.
    • I have noticed that in the past, they seem to switch the lights on in and around the ground very early on. The turnstiles are apparently open from 1.30 for a 3.00 kick off! Not sure why (who on earth goes so early on), perhaps 2.00 or even 2.15 would be sufficient. Reduce consumption is a sensible first step.
So unless the set up costs of the technology drop, then at this juncture, installing them would not seem to be a sensible option.

The actual cost of running the lights is very low anyway.
Best solution would be to switch to a greener energy supplier
