My opinion that he wasn't good enough last season and therefore wouldn't walk into the current team is based on his performances on the pitch.

Your expectations are clearly lower than mine. McArdle, Darby, Gary Jones and Marshall are examples of how players who are genuinely good perform. Mcarten wasn't even close to showing that level of ability. At the most, he showed glimpses of talent and he MIGHT come good.

Marshall was no where in his first season here but then McCall took him under his wing and made him a good player.

Re McCarten, I think the issue is he looks a better player with each passing game we have to watch with the current motley crew rather than anything he actually did for us last season

 

Mcarten never had a run in the team - he had a couple of games here and a couple of games there.
I genuinely think if he had a run of 6/8 games he would have been a regular starter.
Only my opinion of course but compared to some of the shite served up at the moment he would start for me.

 

Marshall was already a proven league 1 player and it was as simple as McCall putting an arm around his shoulder and letting him do his thing. The difference with Mcarten is that there a still huge question marks over his ability to cut it at this level, hence why I don't think agree with your comment that "we had a good player". He may come good, he may even get recalled in January and tear up this league but he's yet to show it.

 

In the current set up he would walk into the team I agree, but he didnt do enough last season to earn that run of games (and remember this was under various managers who formed that opinion)

He was at a new club where he was in and out of the side and then we changed managers

Well of course it’s speculation. Isn’t every signing and player that comes to the club? It’s how football works.

He could flourish under Hopkin. Different managers make it work under different players.

Finally. You accept that he isn't an established league 1 player yet and THINK he would flourish which is a lot different to him actually flourishing and justifying the notion that we had and got rid of a good player. That was the only area I disagreed with you on. I'd love Mcarten to come back and prove to be a valueable asset for us but I'm struggling to see it now tbh and it's just from an ability standpoint either. Given our current state and the distinct possibility of relegation I can only see us going for proven quality in January rather than continuing with the Mcarten project and if things continue exactly as they are, he'll be playing in a higher division than us with Lincoln taking him on permanently.
