As the dust settles on yet another ultimately fruitless season, a few thoughts on the season

    Players.

    Out of ten

Andy Cook 9. Season of his career. Broke records while at times feeding off scraps. Will be missed if he goes.
Harry Lewis 8.5 Best keeper seen at VP since Pickford. Will play higher than league 2 with or without us.
Brad Halliday 7.5 Most consistent player in terms of form, yesterday shouldn't define what has been a good season for him.
Sam Stubbs 7.5 Best of the January signings, Was excellent upto the last 3 or 4 games. Be integral to success next season.
Tyriek Wright 7.5 very good first half of the season, unfortunately that form got him a move to the eventual league 1 champions.
Matty Platt 7. Steady away no nonsense. Paired well with the quick Crichlow
Romoney Crichlow 7. As above, good foil for the dependable Platt
Scott Banks 7 Showed real promise that will only get better with experience. Needs to work on decision making.
Alex Gilliead 6.5 the pick of the central midfielders, although not up against much.
Jamie Walker 6.5 weighed in with a few goals but never hit the levels he can play due to injury.
Harry Chapman 6. Playing out of his favoured position at times but poor first half of season. Unfortunately injured when hitting form.
Adam Clayton 6. Brought some experience and a cool head to the team but ultimately a copy of Smallwood.
Richie Smallwood. 6 Didn't live up to hype we were hoping but a feeling we were asking him to play a role not ideally suited to.
Ryan East 6. Showed at times but never really given a chance to shine.
Matty Foulds 6. Dependable if unspectacular. Strange decision to bring in Bola ends his season elsewhere
Liam Ridehalgh 6. Similar to Foulds. Let no one down, hampered with no one in front of him that was any good.
Jake Young 6. Has a good right peg on him but struggle to see what else he does well.
Levi Sutton 5.5 Love the lads effort but not a player that would get you promotion. Right decision to let go.
Manny Osadebe 5.5. Injury effectively leaving him to small cameos at the end of the season
Abou Eisa 5.5 Another hampered with injury. Showed little when given a chance.
Vadaine Oliver 5.5 Hughes preferred starter, relegated to minutes here and there due to Cooks brilliant form.
Dara Costelloe 4. Might have potential but never showed any with us. About as much goal threat as Charlie Murgatroyd.
Thierry Nevers 4. Struggled with the basics. Opportunity was there to nail a place on the left but failed terribly.
Dion Periara 4. Came with such a fanfare and failed spectacularly.

Mark Hughes 7. Not sure if i'm being generous or not. Hit the playoffs and brought a feel good factor that saw record crowds at VP. But ultimately bottled the playoffs and his decision making at times coupled with his safety first tactics left home fans wanting more. Has set the bar for next season and if he falls below that level i feel the good will factor will soon disappear. Might well rue his decision next season of not fully going for it in the second half of the first leg. Playoff opportunities come along very rarely and fans won't let him forget that if we have a poor start to the season.

So a season with plenty of ups and downs. I'll remember some great away days and some of the end of season home games with those amazing crowds. But ultimately its a missed opportunity to get this club out of the dreaded khazi league and recruitment wasn't really as good as we hoped. I guess it doesn't matter what level the players come from if the jigsaw pieces don't fit.

We can tinker with your numbers and players all day, but on balance pretty fair I’d say.

Time for a big clear out, however there is a nucleus there. All isn’t lost with Smallwood, who should now sit in the Adam Clayton role.
I do want to see Romy back though along with Banks.

Yes .. in theory and contracted to us until June 2024 .. alongside

    Lewis
    Halliday
    Platt
    Smallwood
    Osadebe
    Walker
    East
    Chapman
    Derbyshire
    Stubbs
    Oliver
    Young
    Foulds
    Kelly

Most, like Odusina, were recruited during Hughes' reign and best described as like the curate's egg; good in parts

Only minor disagreements with those ratings from me.

    A:
Cook and Lewis. Each made some mistakes/fluffed sitters/had barren spells so hesitate to put a + to either, but without one or worse both of them we'd have been nervously working out how soon, or even if, we'd get to the magical 53 points to guarantee safety

B: All your 7s, plus Gilliead, Clayton, Ridehalgh. Some would get a +, e.g. Wright, some a -, e.g. Gilliead, Clayton. But basically these players answered the question, nothing more.

C: All the other 6s. They disappointed in one way or another, some more than others, or didn't get all that much of a chance to show they belonged higher in the rankings. Perhaps put Kelly in here -- shows promise, but very limited opportunities. And Derbyshire.

D: Serious problems here: the 5s.

F: Fail. The 4s. Add Bola and Harratt (albeit for non-footballing issues) here.

Manager: C+. Needs to ponder (be made to ponder) his approach to matches, and whether or not it is appropriate in this division. And that will lead to recruitment: get the players in to suit the style. If that cannot be done within the budget, then go back to the first sentence and think some more.

Season: C+. Better than previous ones, but still a disappointment. We ended up pretty well where we deserved to be -- a playoff-level side, not an auto-promotion level side -- not enough As or high-Bs for that. An A-level performance from the manager might have made up for that, but we didn't get it.

    My end of season rambling:

This tweet from a sheff united fan sums it up

The sheer embarrassment of being a city fan. Ridiculed by fans of teams that couldnt fill the TL Dallas. We turn up every week, we support the team in a way some premier league teams dont get and yet we are served poorly by the players, management and owner alike.

Its time for Rupp to step up and fix this shit, the embarrassment we feel is ultimately his fault.

I don’t understand why Rupp is getting stick. We’ve brought in an experienced manager who had previously spent his entire career at the very top level (so a major coup if we’re being realistic). The club have backed the manager with a good budget and we must have had one of the biggest squads in the league. All this achieved whilst keeping the season ticket prices at a really cheap price.

What more do you think Rupp could do?

He bought the club. He mismanaged the club. A club in progress turned into a laughing stock.

If we do not get promotion next season we will lose revenue the following season with the TV deal change. Next season we have Wrexham, Notts County, possibly Stockport, Salford, MK Dons and Gillingham who are all big spenders, potentially more than us. We cannot win on a shoestring like your Stevenages and Carlisle. If we lose even more revenue the season after next when will we get out of this league?

Rupp is the lynchpin to our demise. All boils back to him.

The last 6 years of turgid football with Covid thrown into the mix has taken its toll on my mental health.
The disappointment yesterday made me numb to the point I didn’t say a word to anyone on the journey home and I’m still angry today.
Maybe I need a break from it all?

    Nobody died. We'll be back.
Every set back will make the promotion all the sweeter, when it happens.
    It will happen.

Why would we be embarrassed to be ridiculed by Sheff united? They would easily fill the TL Dallas stand and most of the ground if given the chance.

I didn't say anything about being mocked by sheff United fans. That person was being sympathetic to us.

Twitter has been full of Carlisle, Mansfield, Northampton, Gillingham fans goading us. It's not just the fans mocking us is it though? Are you not embarrassed by the state the club has found itself in once again? This will be our fifth season in l2

Covid, I perhaps understand, but how can following your football team affect your mental health, if it seriously does, I suggest taking up a new hobby and sacking football off
