Personally I feel as though Watt is very similar to Billy Knott in that he’s a CM but never really been settled as holding or attacking.

Feel as though he wants to sit deep and ping long balls all game when he’d actually be a bit better further forward. Not sure he has a good enough football brain yet.

I think he’d shine if we sign Songo and let him sit deep and watt just in front as a link man towards the wingers/attack. He’s very good on the ball for this level and particularly at home we will need someone to unlock teams. Too often we find ourselves devoid of ideas in the past

Without the passive aggressive tone of the question you were asked, I'm still genuinely curious as to why it's being suggested that Watt isn't an Adams type of player.

Adams seems to like two defensive midfield players who can break up play. Watt is more creative than defensive and gives away free kicks on possibly half his tackles. I have no idea what DA thinks of EW but I would guess he is too "fancy dan" for DA. Overall I'm less than convinced that either he or Callum Cooke will be regulars in a DA team. Remains to be seen.

Basically I think Adams prefers aggressive players rather than passive aggressive !!!

Watt is definitely a holding midfielder, but a modern day version in the mould of Jorginho at Chelsea. He's not your blood and thunder hard man in there but clearly wants to get on the ball and dictate things from deep.

Nothing against Watt at all, he is possibly our most sellable asset, but I'm not sure he fits in with L2 football so if we could sell him and spend that money on a better fit I wouldn't lose sleep over it. It's short termism, but I think we need to build a team to get us out of L2 this year and then worry about tweaking that team to stay in L1 and push on.

If that takes 11 bruisers then so be it.

    Thanks.

I don't see Watt as 'fancy Dan' myself but he did seem more prone to mistakes in the latter part of the season. Perhaps the long season and Covid-enforced intensity tired his young legs. Personally, I think that, while he's still got much to learn, he also has a lot to offer, and I'd be loath to let him go. We've all seen the problems of not having strong squad competition so I can't for the life of me see any reason to let him go just because his potential position on the pitch has been reserved for Cooke.

It's a show it or blow it season for Watt IMO.

Much like Wood last season, there was reason for optimism; but if he doesn't evidence that he's a good player at this level then he'll be spending much of his career at middling L2 sides IMO.

I'm not sure if he has the ability to play higher or not - that's all down to Elliot to show.

    Wood failed.

Completely agree with this. And as you I think rightly observe, signing Songo'o (or similar) is key to this. We've not had a midfield enforcer for years ( Gary Jones?). Put that in place, allows others to play.

No point winning the ball if you dont keep it or do anything with it. I think his issue last year was he had to do all roles where with ball winners alongside him, he can do something else which he is better at

Listening to the Hard Truth podcast and Darragh McAnthony just said that Watt’s agent contacted him last week but he said he wasn’t interested.

He then said that Watt should stay at City get a release clause written into his contract and get a promotion under his belt.

The lad has potential , i believe he should sign a new deal with a release clause. Another 12 months with us, he could gain promotion and be playing at a higher level next year or have caught the eye and gain a move higher and probably be a regular starter than a possible squad player at any new team. Not been consistent enough as yet to be starting regularly in a higher division.

I've been pretty critical of Watt but, TBF, I don't think he enjoyed playing under Deadly Derek's style of anti-football. Sparky had him playing more to his potential by the season's end. He's on record that he wants his midfield to be able to play quick passes on the half turn, to make things happen, and Watt can do that.
If MH can get him to cut out the reckless tackles and focus on what he does well then we have a very good player on our hands. I'm sure he'd be better staying here and developing under Hughes than likely sitting on the bench in L1.
