Does anyone have any experience of home charging Electric Vehicles. I have one on order and need to sort out a 7kw charger.

I am aware of the availability of Government grants but looking for recommendations

    Hi Kev
I used these guys - bought the product from them and they did the install. They applied for the grant on my behalf. Good service - can recommend. Local, based in East Morton.

    Thanks for the reply.

I’m in East Anglia which would make life difficult for them. Lol! What type did you get ? There seems to be a multitude of models. The top of the range Anderson looks good but at well over a grand!
From what I can also understand in the short time looking is it depends also on your house electrics?

    Tnx again

    Kev

I'm not fully up on electric vehicles etc but I'm sure I saw that some dealers are offering a charge point as part of the sale package.

East Anglia? :joy: - the missus is from Ipswich and it’s a bloody backwater for EV charging (actually a back water full stop).
Quite a few of the top end chargers utilise 3 phase - which isn’t compatible with most domestic electrics.

That would be my fear, also would have to be 25 yards from our door...

When we looked at it, the advice for installing a charger in a domestic setting was to limit the charger to less than 7.4kw. Most are because they are designed to be run from a standard 230v supply and don't require a three phase supply. There are some chargers running at around 11kw which of course provide faster charging but would definitely need a three phase supply. You need to stay clear of these unless you want to go to the cost and trouble of installing a three phase supply in your garage!

As an addition to what Dennis says, some cars are limited by the size of the onboard charger so there is no point having a bigger home charger if you are limited by the car, at least not for now

I used these guys too. After a false start they were pretty good, and like you say local. Once I got them there they did the install in no time and they applied for the grant on my behalf. A word of advice though. I went cheap and went for the tethered Rolec charger. It does stick out a bit when "holstered". Works brilliantly but if I did it again I think I would get something different

I have been reading up today and you are spot on. Not many households are three phase.
I’m ok I have a drive and ample power to and from the garage. It seems, upon reading, you need a 32 amp supply, same as an electric cooker or shower which is large in the scheme of things. Luckily I have a 40amp fuse powering another supply down the garden which is not used .( used to be for hot tub apparantly). I should be ok on the power front.

it’s the charger itself I am looking for suggestions on. There are loads looking around this morning but as you say 7.4 kw is the Max for 240v..

Car will have 100kwcharging capacity which is way beyond anything a home charger can provide. 7.4 kw is Max domestic I think, unless it 3-phase which is reasonably rare for homes.

Like you are suggesting so many options. I have found numerous this morning. Zappi, pod point, Anderson , but mega expensive and yes Rolec.

I doubt they will come to me, however there are plenty within 40 or so miles.
Someone in the village has suggested the local leccy fits them and is registered for Olev grants. I might see what he can offer.

Yes they are but VW won’t have one available until 2022! Oddly that’s first thing I asked.

Hence the home charger! Yes the high power ones are public use in car parks etc etc. Nearest is a free Tesco one , and then 10 miles is next, so agree on the backwaterobservation. Plenty of range so locally its no brainer at 2-4p per mile using off peak leccy, compared to 15p a mile for petrol.

Mine is a plug in hybrid. When I got it it claimed a range of 41 miles on battery power. Most I have managed is about 22 and that is driving with a right foot like a butterfly. I think it costs about £1.40 to charge fully so probably works out about 7p a mile for me on electric

Ive been looking at Octopus Go tariff. 0030-0430 ( or similar is 5p per kWh) Thats how its calculated at less than 5p per mile. Range of car is advertised at 260 miles on one charge of 100% , however realistically call it 180-190 miles per charge. Other than holidays or Bradford and back that’s more than sufficient for our needs. Home charging on off peak is going to be my way forward. Might as well take advantage of the two Gov grants before they pull the plug?

    UPDATE

Now finally on the Octopus Go tariff after they installed a smart meter for free. The whole process took about 9 weeks from enrolment to getting the 5 pence per kW/h 00.30-04.30 tariff.

I did a charge on my car last night during a portion of this period and it added Approx 100 additional miles on my available range.

    Total Cost £1.12p

With the price of petrol seeing its highest rate for 13 years , it looks like electric vehicles charging on these tariffs are outstandingly cheap to run

Don’t be fooled re performance either, mine does 0-60 in 6.8 seconds!

I've just taken the plunge today and ordered my first electric car with around 250 mile range. So, over the next couple of weeks I'll be sorting out a home wall charger and looking at EV electricity tariffs.
