We've been put in a group with Barnsley and Grimsby. The u21 team will be drawn into the group tomorrow, the options are:
    • Everton U21
    • Liverpool U21
    • Leicester City U21
    • Manchester City U21
    • Manchester United U21
    • Newcastle United U21
    • Nottingham Forest U21
    • Wolverhampton Wanderers U21
We've played 5 of the 8 since U21 teams were introduced.

From a club financial view we probably want Man Utd u21s with Barnsley (H) and Grimsby (A) but I'm not sure if there will be much difference between that draw and the alternatives.

Would prefer Barnsley away for a different away day personally - plus it’s nearer!

Really we should get second in this group. Depends on what team is played though!

Good for finances though it’s also good to test the squad

Worst case scenario financially is lose all 3 group games we still get £20k participation fee with losses covered when at home, on top of that there is decent prize money

    · Group Stage - £10,000 for a win, £5,000 for a draw

    · Round Two - £20,000 for a win

    · Round Three - £40,000 for a win

    · Quarter Final - £50,000 for a win

    · Runner-up - £50,000

    · Winner - £100,000

    It's worth having.

League 2 drag all the money in from anywhere it can be got.

    Irrelevant b*llocks competition.

Only people excited even one iota are those who are struggling without the weekly fix where even the thought of some JPT fixtures against youth reserves is appealling.

Once the season starts these matches will be of no interest to anyone bar the City Points obsessives.

Man City u21s join our group. Time for revenge for that defeat in 2019.

interesting looking back at their team from 2019 only 3 players (Tommy Doyle, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers) then the rest have been sold.

Man City are not really big at promoting youth.

I am maintaining my boycott of this ridiculous competition until Prem Under 21 teams are removed.

I understand your position completely. The competition doesn't attract the numbers, it's been devalued imo with Development Squads being involved and many clubs are indifferent towards it. Clubs are even encouraged to becoming involved by having their palms crossed with silver just to enter the competition. More worryingly for the EFL, the competition no longer has a corporate sponsor. Papa John's have pulled out and a replacement has yet to be found. The writing is on the wall.

Scrap it. It attracts really low crowds until the bandwagon jumpers get on the final, it congests the fixture list and has silly rules over playing the strongest team. It's run it's course.

They waited until midway through the season for Carabao to get involved with the League Cup. They'll find a sponsor when someone comes in with an offer at the right price, they won't get one for the sake of it. The reason the U21 clubs were introduced was because of low crowd numbers then the Premier League clubs said they would pay money to enter which means clubs don't make a loss like they used to before.
Going through our attendances some of our highest have been against u21 clubs. In 2016 we played stoke which was 1400, higher than Cambridge in the next round. Man City in 2017 was 1,200 which was higher than Rotherham and oldham in the next round. In 2021, Lincoln was 1700 but Man United was 2000. Leicester last season was over 2500 and that was only beaten by Sheff Wednesday bringing nearly 3500.
If the U21s leave then the competition dies which would be a shame for the lower leagues taking away a chance to get to Wembley
