We dont always utilise 3 subs, so not sure the benefit of 5 subs. Not for me, 3 is enough in my opinion

I'd like to see a 3+1 system, that is 3 substitutes, plus being able to bring back one of the players taken off.

Fair enough but come July you'll still be flying your squad half way around the world paying in meaningless games just for financial benefit.

Then, after that we'll have the same moans about fixture congestion and the"big" sides wanting replays scrapped from domestic cups even though they only play the kids and a few ressies anyway.

I'm really not sure if you believe that or not?

There's only one reason Man Utd, Real Madrid, Barca etc fly half way around the world to places like Japan and its got nothing whatsoever to do with it being the best type of preparation for the PL campaign. To suggest otherwise is a nonsense and the kind of statement I'd expect from those pushing for a European super league and such like.

honestly I think all this does is help the bigger clubs, you look at watford's bench most of them would walk into any championship team. I do understand its more for being able to rotate players off and can see it being beneficial for us too. such as taking Donaldson off without scuppering any tactical changes/poor players.

And all of that they could do in France or Spain which is only a short hop away but they won't do because its purely financially motivated and very little to do with player health and fitness. I'm not even sure why you're trying to debate those points?

Ffs. That's two more opportunities for DMH to get game time now.

4 outfield subs + the option of replacing a goal keeper with another keeper would be a more sensible compromise.

I keep hearing the argument that the bigger teams benefit because of the quality they have on the bench. I kind of agree but on the flip side, the top teams dominate possession and wear the “lesser” teams down. Allowing 5 subs would enable these teams to bring more fresh legs on and potentially reduce the number of late goals conceded due to fatigue.

From a City perspective, and L2 in general, I’m not sure anyone has a squad with enough quality that they can bring on 5 game changing players so not sure it’ll tip the scales in anyone’s favour.

That's a problem with your squad being so poor though not because its a bad idea. We are already seeing players having issues with fatigue-related injuries, especially in the PL where the season restarted so they had very little break and with games coming thick and fast it's going to just get worse. The extra 2 subs doesn't solve the issue but it will help a bit as thats 2 extra players you only need to do 60-70mins of a match and also it means you can make a sub without being as concerned about an injury then leaving you down a man

No, you'd still have to take someone off. Of course, Tranmere Rovers are exempted from having to take a player off, providing they are at home to Sunderland in the FA Cup.

Sure the stronger the bench the more it helps but it would have been the same thing brought up when subs first were introduced and then again anytime the sub numbers have increased.

I'm not sure you can exactly call them meaningless games that are just for financial benefit. Yes there is a financial benefit but its primary goal is pre-season matches to get the players fit for the season via carefully calculated training regimes. If they weren't flying off they would be playing such games in England. Going abroad has the benefits of training in weather that is better for the players and being away also means the clubs have more control on them as they are stuck in the team hotel rather than going home. Also remember that generally preseason games are pretty well spaced out and players generally only play 45mins, maybe 60 at a push in the later matches. It just so happens that during preseason time some of the best places to go and do preseason from a fitness POV also are some of the best places from a financial pov

Rolling subs! I'd also like them to bring in the rule that you can't score when in the box, and must always have one player in the opposition half at all times.

If they bring in the "no over shoulder height" rule, we're buggered.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. With smaller squads more of the squad are likely to get some game time so could be beneficial in that way.

The downside is the extra time it will add on to a game and imagine a team hanging on and making 3 subs 1 minute apart at the end of a game. Of course it could work in our favour as well when we are hanging on to kill the game.

Wasn't it the case before that the 5 subs (if all used) could only be brought on over 3 substitutions ?

Again nowhere am I saying there isn't a financial element but its absolutely not just financially motivated. It's about finding that mix of whats good financially and having the right teams available to play against, having the facilities to take advantage of and the right conditions. When you go to the States as an example you have world-class sports facilities to use at every college in the country, let alone the professional sports teams. You also have alot of lesser teams you can play whose season's run at a different time to Europe which creates a good set of circumstances, they are teams they should beat but the fitness levels make it closer. And these teams play at grounds with great quality of the pitch. Then when you get closer to the end you have good neutral venues to play against one of the other top teams touring.

If you go to Spain largely the good facilities are owned by the top Spanish clubs who may not be open to them being used by another team. The lesser teams are pretty poor, aren't any further along in their fitness and play at fairly poor grounds that increase the chance of injuries. And the big money ties would still be there so its not like going to Spain is going to be significantly less financially rewarding, infact it would most likely save some money on the travelling costs
