A very interesting - and worrying - read. We're not referenced, but without Rupp propping up the clubs finances, potentially serious financial consequences may have befallen us this season.

This can only end one way, surely...?

The salary expectations and running costs of EFL players/clubs are only going to increase. And the money simply isn't flowing down...

The same is true about a lot of clubs. Only way it will stop is if clubs take a stand but as it can not be done on mass it would be footballing suicide for individual clubs to do it

Very good and true article. A member of the EFL Board told me two weeks ago there is an expectation that six clubs will be in serious difficulty this close season and may even fail. The Premier and Championship don't care so long as their money keeps rolling in. Things have to change, Shaun Harvey leaving the EFL will be a start but that is only my personal view.

    I agree on Shaun Harvey.

There needs to be root and branch change - the gap between the championship and Leagues 1/2 is growing year on year. It wouldn't surprise me to see those leagues become permanently separated, i.e. no promotion beyond League 1 - or perhaps, promotion based partly on league performance and partly on financial strength.

Clubs are going to start going bust, very soon. We need our own solution - we've not been a well run club of late, and we seem to be carrying unsustainable financial risk around how we spend, and how we price tickets etc. I don't know what the answer is.

To be honest, I've become sickened by football at the highest level.

Bolton, Macclesfield, Bury are all in trouble, and then you have clubs like Reading and Swansea pissing away 100s of thousands a week, the championship clubs collectively lose £10m a week, that’s and average of losing £21m a year each and have lost £1.86bn in the last five years. That’s despite parachute payments. Liverpool and Spurs will each earn around £110m from the Champions League alone this year. It’s not sustainable in anyway.

I agree too about Shaun Harvey. I'm at a loss to understand what's happened to our country when in countless walks of life the incompetent get promoted and good people never get anywhere. We need look no further than our political system.

The Premier League and Championship clubs might encounter the same problems soon. There is a big discussion going on at the moment about abolishing domestic league qualification for the Champions League and replacing it with a ring fenced "promotion and relegation" system where the best teams automatically qualify for the Champions League and some teams get relegated/promoted to the competition based upon their performance. Anyone with half a brain knows it's just a European Super League via the back door. The domestic leagues are fighting it but unless they take a stand UEFA seem to be in favor of the proposals.

What will happen to the Premier League if the big 5/6 all automatically qualify for the Champions League regardless of league position?

The EFL certainly changed their FFP rules as they impact on Championship clubs three season ago. But what the article doesn't say is that in changing the rules, the EFL weakened them. Previously if losses were reported at more than £5mill per season, the owners had to inject up to a max of £8mill to put a cap on the losses. Now Championship clubs can have average losses of £13mill a season over a three year period without requiring owners to inject more equity into their clubs. EFL have only themselves to blame for that and should have anticipated what might happen.

Just read this from Kieran Maguire about the finances of Rotherham United. Bankrolled by Tony Stewart in terms of infrastructure and new ground but now look a sustainable club, money in the bank and making a profit. Certainly against the grain in todays money hungry football world but does show it can be done.

I read it too ...... Yes, Park - Quite frightening. If only more fans would read and understand these situations - They wouldn't be in such a hurry to 'spend someone else's money'. (Re City fans and Herr Rupp.)
