Eight years ago today I hit my rock bottom and ended up in A&E, without the support of my family and friends, both online and real life, I would be part of this news story.

    Having a beer. Tough day.

Apologies for this long waffle, but I feel the need to share my afternoon with you.

There is a child in my class who is particularly challenging. He has been temporarily excluded from school three times this year already.

He decides he wanted to sit in a different seat next to his friend. To do this, he pushed another boy off his chair. I said he had to go back to his chair immediately. Predictably he refused. He proceeded to stick both his middle fingers up at me and then say eff you, you effing sh1thead. You can't do anything to me. Eff off sh1thead etc etc.

I send one of the other children to get another adult as I'm on my own in the classroom. In the meantime, he picks up his chair and holds it above his head. (At the moment, because of COVID, we are not allowed to physically remove a child from a room unless they are in danger). I move some of the children nearby to the other side of the room. He starts spinning around with the chair.

He then puts the chair down, runs to my desk, pulls the keyboard out from the computer and starts bashing it against my desk. I evacuate the children from the classroom. Two members of the senior management team come to manage him. He continues to trash the classroom. Pens everywhere, displays ripped down etc.

In the meantime, I have to take the children somewhere. The only space I can use, because of COVID bubbles, is a small room used by nursery and reception age children to eat their lunch. It has a very low ceiling, awful acoustics and no whiteboard or computer facilities etc. I end up having to keep the children in there for over an hour.

During that hour, I do an impromptu session about friendship and relationships. We discuss that hitting anyone is not acceptable. A child then says something that needs to be urgently followed up from a safeguarding perspective.

I sent another child off, to get another adult, so that can be dealt with. As this point, one of the children then decides to get up and wallop another child. It was completely out of character, but this further unsettled all the kids and needed managing. Finally, someone brought some pens and paper for me and they could calm down.

I know everyone has crap days, but honestly wondering now if I want to continue doing this. I just seem to spend most of my time dealing with children who just cannot behave, at the expense of the majority who want to learn. Very frustrating.

Finally got a diagnosis for my painful arm. Calcific Tendinitis of the humeral head. So physio, ultra sound guided steroid injection which if it still doesn’t clear followed by surgery.

At least I now know I’m not imagining it
