The numbers aren’t out at all as they have always made it clear what are involved in the numbers.

How are they counting deaths in France, Italy and Spain?

Do they? Do they also count the death of CV19 isn’t the primary cause?

They mentioned it on the BBC today.

I would provide you will a link but it's a little grim reading about death. However, yes other countries do include carehomes, hospices etc but the UK doesn't.

Hence why when you look at the figures Spain will show one figure before lunch then it changes after 6pm.

I read somewhere that there is a petition going round which states government should requisition private hospitals and all care homes to have a United front on this virus. It makes sense and would give us one picture of what is really going on out there.
I think Spain requisitioned private hospitals?

Do we ever include these numbers to catch up or are they forgotten?

there are two sets of figures released. One is the daily one, NHS hospitals, which is done as it is the quickest set of data that can be captured. The second set is from the ONS which includes all deaths registered where CV19 is listed on the death certificate. This can be a lag of over a week depending on when people register the death. I know when my MIL died the other year we couldn’t pick the paper work up from the hospital till the Tuesday, she died on Saturday, and then we had to get an appointment to register her death.

What is this obsession with the daily number of deaths? I know the medial love it, they can't get enough deaths to report on but all these daily graphs and debate about numbers going up or down or whos top of the leader board?

For me it helps you appreciate where we are with the curve and how serious the situation is. I mean I know it’s serious but without numbers to compare I can’t comprehend what is happening.
I was intrigued about the recording of deaths and @Storck@Storck seems to be clued up on them so asked the question
It’s grim to discuss it in deaths and I don’t celebrate the fact so many have died, it’s just easiest way to know if we have a good handle on it I think.

not sure it was aimed at me but thought I’d answer

The week before the start of the lockdown I was in an all business meeting with around 10 other people. The Monday of the following week we had word the one of the attendees had been taken into hospital over the weekend and tested positive for Covid. A few days later, the 4 of us who were sat closest developed broadly similar symptoms. In my case, a tight chest, mild cough, headaches. All pretty mild but noticeable. I had strong fatigue though. Lasted about 10 days, on and off. Some days I had no energy at all. Needed to have a sleep in the afternoon. None of it was really bad, but the timing was the main factor as to why i think I probably had it, along with other colleagues having very similar experiences. Maybe one day i’ll find out, if these antibody tests every come out.

Feel free to answer it wasnb't aimed at anyone inparticular. Personally i've just switched off from it. I accept the severity of the situation. Endless graphs and explanations aligned with groundhog day government press conferences have left me somewhat numb to it.

I think that's something overlooked or lost in the panic @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam. How many people have had it but have just felt a bit "under the weather" and now seem to be fine, when we only seem to hear about those getting seriously ill and dying with it. I think the attention given to the high number of deaths leads people to have a disproportionate sense of fear. Obviously those in so called at risk groups will feel that sense of fear too. Hopefully you won't be offended when I say I hope you have had it, as if so, it reminds us it is not necessarily a major condition.

It has been, and is, depressing to see the various numbers rising, but on the other hand we are all at least about 2-3 weeks into strict measures against the virus, and we are beginning to see curves flattening. Early days, but that suggests the measures are working, and one can then use that to encourage people to keep at it. And that can, in turn, give us a better sense of this:
My province is set to extend the state of emergency for another 28 days; some models have this week as being the peak. The numbers are made much worse by the problems in retirement & nursing homes, which continue to be hit hard. Overall, the federal chief medical bod has said that almost 50% of all our deaths have been in people living in such homes.

And that fear gets stoked by many of the media outlets -- the usual case of sex / violence / death (as appropriate) selling. I know the numbers we get are not fully accurate -- until someone like FB gets tested and knows for sure he won't show up in the stats, for example -- but we can look at the number of confirmed cases as given by a source such as worldometers.com, and figure out just what percentage of a country's, or the world's population, that makes up. At the moment, the total number of worldwide confirmed cases is still less than the population of Toronto...

I know this is no consolation to those who've suffered and/or died from it. But a sense of proportion is lacking in some of the reporting.

    The numbers are flawed though.

As you say, these numbers include ALL deaths with CV19 listed on the death certificate. This is even the case when it's not the cause of death but the person has CV19 or anti-bodies in their system. This means that even if COVID-19 had no bearing whatsoever on the death, if it comes up on the test, it has to be included on the death certificate and therefor is added to the Coronavirus death toll.

So in my opinion the numbers are meaningless, they have no idea whatsoever how many people have died from this disease. It's why they are reported as 'Deaths with coronavirus' or 'Coronavirus deaths', and not 'Deaths from coronavirus'.

No offence at all, I hope that's what it was too, as it means me and my house have ome through the other side and have some immunity.

Ive stopped watching the press conferences in the main. They are becoming pointless now and don’t know why we don’t have them every other day or every 3 days. Make them worthwhile
