On many occasions yesterday (like in most football matches) the crowd got a buzz whenever we got a corner, as if there was actually a chance a goal would come from it! But from my recollection, City rarely score from them. Surely it is just a fallacy that getting a corner kick gives us an attacking advantage. Total false hope

maybe the statto’s out there can shine a light on it on my behalf?

We were good at corners under Parky.

We used to have Rory McCardle and Andrew Davies at Corners in Parkinson days. These current centre backs never look like scoring.

I can recall 2 goals from corners this season. Both from Cook- v Tranmere and Stevenage, but agree that generally we do not look threatening from corners at all.

In the last few matches, Platt has twice set up an open net chance by by heading from the back post into the six yard box (both chances missed).
And yet Smallwood has received derision from the stands for his corners going out at the back post - nobody on the back post.
Why we don’t put someone at the back post for corners baffles me.
For free kicks it seems we do.
    I find it odd.
Agree with the OP though, we don’t capitalise on corners for whatever reason

I think Cook has scored from a corner or two.

But Romoney and Platt are useless in the opposition area.

They might as well just stay back.

It's a standard for every set of fans in this country, don't think fans in any other country get as excited as we do. The average for goals resulting in corners varies but that standard is around 3%. I can remember Mourinho saying not long after he joined Chelsea first time that fans only get so excited by a corner in England.

We are bad at corners yes, but also have you ever seen a team as bad at throw ins as we are. Not just the current mob, but it seems to have gone on for years. We just have no idea, watch us next time we get one.

The thrower spends upto a minute, looking for someone to give it to, no one moves at all and we just end up throwing it anywhere invariably giving possession away

    3% is very low
I realise these are PL stats but
Over the last 18 seasons, corner-kicks have produced between 9.8 per cent and 14.2 per cent of all Premier League goals.

I once read a stat that only 1 in 50 corners results in a goal. Not sure if that still stands as it was a few years ago.

We were good at most things under Parky, plenty of goal mouth action but unfortunatly for some it was not football for the purists, in league two you rarely get quality football Stevenage being an example like the guy or not he's turned them around whether they can sustain it is another matter.

you both make good yet opposite points. a good way to look at this bystander would be to see how many corners were in a season and then how many goals were scored. I do agree with the other poster further up who said it was around 3%.

I'm sure i remember reading that corners aren't particularly good for goal stats. Not like say Hockey where its one of the main ways of scoring.

Its funny cos this thing does my head in.
The crowd goes wild with excitement when we get a corner from not playing it into the box early enough or dithering about when in promising positions.
I'm thinking its the worst case scenario from where we were 5 seconds ago. :joy:

It's clearly very far from the worst case scenario, which would be losing possession and conceding a breakaway goal, whilst committing a red card foul in the process. It's also better than slinging in a poor cross from open play or a bad shot etc etc which result in a goal kick to the opposition. At least with a corner we retain possession in an attacking position. I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate :grinning:

Also the earlier quote of 1 in 50 is 2%, so 2%, 3% whichever way you look at it in the vast majority of cases we won’t see a goal from a corner. Perhaps we need to start being more clever in these situations.

The lack of contribution from our CBs at set pieces is a telling reflection of why they defend balls into our box poorly; they don't have the desire to stick their head where it hurts. They just want to have 10 yards of space to pass the ball sideways. The likes of McArdle and Davies enjoyed defending. Its what you need at this level.
