Rod, thanks for your work on this and thanks to fellow Bantam Talk people for providing the many questions asked.

The P A system in the kop (upper tier) is atrocious. I don't know if several of the speakers aren't working (not worked for years) but you can't make out a thing really, wasn't until I saw T&A and realised cheque was for burns unit!!

Plus they played James 'Come Home' (I think, it was I could barely make out!) on Saturday and love that song. I sit in H block so don't know what the sound is like in other blocks...but from what other people have said it sounds like it is the same...I'm happy to sit in every block of the kop whilst they play music to test it....

I moved from the rear of the Kop, to the front and I have to say the difference in sound is very noticeable. Towards the rear, muffled sound, unable to make the discussions out whilst my new seating, no real problems whatsoever

My understanding is that it is City who sell the tickets rather than the ‘away’ ticket office.

The next thing is how many seats do you allocate to ‘families’? What percentage?

If it is blocks perhaps the outer one could be set aside for families? If you look at VP there are 6 blocks in the Kop but only 5 in the TL Dallas stand. The Osmond Stand at Grimsby has 3 blocks which appear uneven in size on the stadium plan.

    How do you segregate?

It is actually quite difficult as in my experience people ignore the seats allocated and often sit anywhere.

Unless there were separate entrances and segregation, perhaps with a further loss of seats, I struggle to see how it will work.

Quite frankly it is not ‘Simple’.

For the avoidance of doubt I have been to grounds where I have heard the ‘F Word’ far more frequently than every five minutes and it is not something I wish to have to endure!

Just to clarify. Yes it’s our ticket office that issue the away tickets but there would be no need to give a set allocation. It also doesn’t require separate entrances etc. The reason why so many don’t take their allocated seats is because those who want to stand etc want to be together in a pack. My proposal also addresses this behaviour because they’re all be in seats together anyway!

It’s not an issue where the stewards say “sit anywhere “. But that wasn’t the case at sell out Grimsby and at some other grounds.

By way of example, assume the away end has 26 rows (A to Z) of seats each numbered 1 to 100. Seat 1 is far left of the stand, seat 100 is far right.

Our ticket office designates the left side of the stand as the family section and starts selling A1 (+ adjacent seat if appropriate), B1; C1 etc. with everyone else being allocated A 100, B100, C 100 etc. Even with every seat sold, you would end up with the family section to the left and everyone else to the right. The allocation between the two would be the exact proportion sold.

Okay, it’s perhaps not that simple to work in practice but it’s worth exploring and as way of solving a growing problem.

There’s always a first time for everything. If you can have a “Family Friendly” zone for home fans, why not for away fans? It’s just that we would organise our own through the ticket allocation. See my earlier thoughts on why you don’t need to forecast ticket sales for each group.

Have you seen the history of our ticket office? It ain't happening is it. It doesn't really bother me but maybe its worth having a word with the club regarding future away games. To be honest i'm not sure we are gonna see many scenes of boisterous fans this season, don't remember many the last time we were in league 2, Saturday more than likely a one off.

Now l may be wrong, but my understanding is the tickets are all joined when they arrive in a batch and are separated when sold. So it may be quite difficult to detach them to provide a family area. If they arrive in separate lots per block it maybe easier.
Another problem could arise if they were blocks of say 280/300 and City are allocated 5 or 6. How many blocks you designate as ‘Family Friendly’. One or two? After you have gone through the category of Priority Card sales, are you introducing yet another separate sales period? Sometimes City receives Away tickets relatively shortly before a game.
If you sell say 185 in one ‘Family Friendly’ block, do you return the remainder to the host club? What if like Saturday, the Away Section is totally sold out in the ‘Adult/Ordinary’ area yet there are unoccupied seats in the ‘Family Friendly’ area?
There are a number of games which are not all ticket. You can Pay on the Day (supporters were posting on Saturday about sales, despite all the tickets going many days earlier). If you can turn up on the day, there are no designated seats, then how do you stop people sitting anywhere, potentially in the ‘Family Friendly’ area ?
If you increase the number of Stewards and they then have to enforce the segregation, there will be costs. It can also turn the mood ugly, if people feel they are being overly managed and some fans are not overly cooperative!
I think it would be an issue for the EFL to come up with a formula, rather than expecting City to devise a solution.
Don’t get me wrong, l can see the attraction, l don’t like seats where the language is foul and l don’t want to have to stand throughout the match. However I think that it is not perhaps as straightforward as dedicating some seats and currently may not be workable. Perhaps one for @wetherbywhaler@wetherbywhaler to comment on.

It’s not compulsory to choose a seat in the Family Friendly Zone. If you want to take your chance of sitting behind a group of backsides who like to stand throughout the whole match, it’s your choice!

Thanks for your detailed response. The proposal is never going to be foolproof but an attempt to try and address what I perceive to be a growing issue. Where there is pay on the gate, sufficient spare seats will be available for a “sit where you like” guidance to be in place and the problem solves itself. The cooperation of the away club is essential for this to work. Do the ticket office managers ever get together to discuss such issues? Has Family Friendly Zones for away fans ever been discussed? Could Valley Parade set an example by designating the T Dallas stand as family friendly for a large away following as an experiment?

Thats usually the scenario at most away games, the singers tend to congregate together, usually at the back and they always stand up. For the majority of the time it causes no problem and at least gives us some modicum of atmosphere. On Saturday i had i chose to stand up in my original seat i wouldn't have been able to see the half way line, never mind the far end goal. There were plenty of empty seats in front of us though so migrated down the stand to where we could stand and see the game. I honestly can't see the 'problems' on Saturday happening again this season.

They won't open the TL Dallas due to cost restraints while other parts of the ground have large availability.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my original post on segregation of away tickets. Judging by the comments, even if the club found a way around all the complexities, there is not much appetite for such an initiative. Let us hope that whether we sit or stand we are all rewarded with a decent performance and a win on our next away adventure. Until my next bright idea ….zzzzzzzzzzzz

The problem with stronger policing and stewarding is the fans then complain that the police and stewards are too heavy handed, as you say theres not a lot we can do. As for the police, was there any comment regarding the numbers of police both inside and especially outside the ground? There were more police with riot helmets and body armour than there were for our games against big rivals in league 1. Massive overkill from Lincolnshire police for what was pretty much an incident free day.
