With Cook hitting the 30-goal total mark for the season today -- only our sixth player ever to do this -- I thought I'd put together some lists for our leading goalscorers in a season. I trust I've got them all... First list for 20 or more League goals only, second for 20 or more total goals in a season. Cook is in very good company.

Do we know if play off matches count towards the total?

7 goals in 5 games is a lot easier than 7 in 2 games! :joy:

True enough! But I believe that playoff stats don't get counted in with regular season stats. At any rate, I keep them separated. as is done in reference works such as Frost's BCAFC Complete Record book, and more recently Barry Hugman's Football Players' Records books and website.

So Cook will just have to get the 7 -- or maybe even 8 -- in 2...

Total goals but not league goals. Playoffs are a separate competition

I don't think Windass gets the credit he deserves because maybe he's a bit of a simpleton, but the guy was a natural. He is easily in the top five strikers of the football league of all time, in my opinion. He was way too good for us in the football league

I had to read this a few times to digest it.
Dean Windass in the top 5 strikers of all time?? Really?

Be interesting to see your top ten?
As the Football League was founded in 1888 and until 1992 covered all the divisions. Then he is up against a formidable cadre of talent!!

Just using the Championship as the benchmark between 1992 and today.
Deano is ranked 134 on goals scored in the 2nd tier

My top 10 not in any order would be

    Billy Sharp
    Aleksander Mitrovic
    Kevin Philips
    Teemu Pukki
    Shaun Goater
    Marlon King
    Jordan Rhodes
    David Nugent
    Clinton Morrison
    Ross McCormack

Yeah. The playoff goal in the Championship playoff alone would put him in there. The technique and skill was remarkable and at his age, simply amazing.

I’d have Dean Windass, Lee Trundle, Jordan Rhodes, Billy Sharp and David Nugent. It’s my list, and I’m basing it on talent, goals and overall play.

How are you defining 'the football league'? As Bigrod pointed out, that includes all four divisions from 1888 to 1992. Which would put Deano up against some of the best British strikers of all time - the likes of Greaves, Charlton, Hurst, Law, Rush, Lineker, Francis, Hughes, Charles, Lofthouse and many more full international strikers. Deano, and the others you mention above, were very good players, undoubtedly, but were never in that exulted company.
