A great partnership.

He was quite a physical unit too was the antique dealer. Cracking pairing though

 

Pure skill and technique on the left and pace and determination on the right.

The 2 up top had perfect help and complemented each other well.

 

Mills and Blake it has to be they got us to the big stage

 

You could probably argue that case for Mills but Blake had some longevity and certainly after he left.

Mills would probably have stayed too, as would Moore if the contract offers had been fair.

To be fair, she was a looker pre her trout lip surgery

 

Hawley was just about 6ft hardly little and large

 

The rumour was it was Jagger who was sleeping with Mills wife and jaggers wife forced him to take the sheff wed job to get away.

 

After Alan Gilliver, Gerry Ingrams strike partner was Joe Cook, they were very prominent in our great cup run of 75/76 when we reached the quarter finals. Gerry left City midway through the 1976/77 promotion season to play in the USA and we brought in Bernie Wright to replace him.

 

Very similar players in stature but boy what a devastating duo.

 

Mills and Blake for me were the perfect partnership. Plus a Beagrie who could whip those balls in.

 

Hanson / Wells were a more traditional big man-little man combo than Mills / Blake, probably the only better one I've seen live are Quinn / Phillips

 

More like Lager and Lager.

 

I spoke to Mills for quite a while at the PL team dinner a couple of year ago. He came across as a really nice and genuine bloke and said to me that he definitely wanted to stay but GR was offering new players stupid money and the players that got them there very little.

As an example, I was told by another player that Moore asked for his wages doubling to £8k a week. We refused and replaced him with Weatherall on £18k a week.

 

Ha ha. that reminds me of Mark Leonard mate!
A cross comes in and Leonard jumps before the ball has even been kicked, by the time the ball gets to him he's landed back on the ground and not a cat in hells chance of heading it!!

Always remember standing behind the dug outs at Wigan old ground (my old man Always went in the home end at away matches) when we played them. Hawley was sub and was sat on an.old school chair, in his kit, smoking a fag. Yorath turned to him and said your on. He just stubbed his fag out and went straight on. No warm up !

 

Certainly more talented, but 1 season wonders.

Hanson and Wells did it for a few years and cemented a bigger legacy with that cup run (plus a promotion). IMO of course.
