the problem with your negative view is the money being spent elsewhere would mean it's spent in durham, Southampton or wrexham.

this is a game changer. 3,000 jobs, a million tourists, £700 million boost the economy. I'm so proud we have got this that I blubbed when it was announced.

give them chance to make it work.

If it generates £700m and creates 3.000 jobs that has to be good news, well done to those who put the City forward and the work they have done to win the City of Culture for Bradford.

I don't get the negativity from some on here about this.

At last some positive good publicity nationally about our home city, not to mention the potential financial and job impact, and still some moan and knock the status it gives us.

    Me neither - it's weird!!

Does the city deserve "city of culture" if you take it literally? Of course not but neither did Hull or Coventry. It's a great opportunity to showcase positivity about Bradford and get some investment in, both of which are immensely positive and also needed.

"Bradford, one of the most diverse places in the UK, has been named the 2025 city of culture, a prestigious accolade that attracts thousands of tourists and guarantees millions of pounds of funding and investment.

"Coventry [the outgoing city of culture] received £172m in grants and investments during its year as city of culture. The money helped fund music concerts, the UK’s first permanent immersive digital art gallery, a new children’s play area in the centre of the city, and improvements to public transport.

The judges said they were impressed by the ambition of Bradford’s bid which celebrated the power of diversity and aimed to create new opportunities. The bid encouraged strong local engagement with artists and residents, focused on creating a sense of local pride, the judges said."

I’d rather it was called for what it is - a government grant for deprived areas - to dress it up as ‘culture’ is an insult to anyone of reasonable intelligence.
Hopefully it’ll go towards worthwhile projects that will benefit the city and the people within it, not stupid white elephants that this city is famous for.

Can you imagine Bradford council being let loose with £172 million? You'd get better value sticking it on the roulette table

How exactly as a Bradfordian of 50 years is this city of culture going to benefit me or my life or the people of this city? Are we going to see long term benefits in terms of infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, roads and rail links that are barely fit for purpose? Once the circus has left town what's exactly will be the lasting legacy left behind after they've managed to chew through 10s of millions of pounds of tax payers money? I remember the council trying their hardest to get the Odeon demolished, or when they claimed city park outside city hall brought in £80 million of revenue into the city each year despite having no tangible evidence to prove it. I'm like you Kev, I believe the money could be far better spent

Interesting to note that Hull and Coventry have a higher rate of unemployment than the rest of the UK
Some on here think that Bradford will actually create employment and attract larger companies to set up shop there whoever is in charge has their work cut out that's for sure
Good Luck with that one !!!

Same here. Just because I don't see the worth in something doesn't mean I'm negative about everything else. Always said if you can show me how Bradford will benefit from something long term then I'm all ears. This city of culture is just putting lipstick on a pig.

I've lived in this city for 50 years, I don't dislike living here although if I had a choice there are places not too far away I'd rather live. Get out to the outskirts of Bradford especially to the west and there's some lovely areas and views especially down the Aire Valley. Only yesterday I had someone come all the way from Liverpool to pick up an item and he commented how nice and quiet the area was. But the actual city of Bradford itself has very little going for it. Essentially landlocked with no major water source near the city centre, it suffers terribly in modern times for its geographical location, the transport links are non existent and the reason it prospered in the first place died a long time ago. Being able to change and adapt was easier for Hull, being by the coast surrounded by little else bar flat land is a developers dream. What really does Bradford as a city bring to the table other than a Victorian era that, other than stunning Victorian architecture, gave us the lowest life expectancy amongst the working classes, a canal, a railway and motorway that are all dead ends. I'm still trying to work out how, when businesses are relocating elsewhere because of such reasons as poor infrastructure, how winning this bud is going to create the apparent thousands.of permanent jobs that has been claimed. I might sound cynical but we've seen all these claims before.

I don’t get this kind of thing other than being a waste of money at this time of current financial crisis. I get people need a good time, and the City needing a boost but the cost can’t be justified when a decent percentage of the City are struggling to heat and eat.
I don’t intend to be a spoil sport, just a realist under the current circumstances. No intention to offend!
