Lost to League 1 opponents on penalties. No worries. For me, the Donnie defeat was actually a real victory for City. I understand why so many posters obsess about new signings, because for so long we've never brought through a raft of young new players into the first team squad. One or two, here and there. But we could never rely on growing our own, to fill spaces and problems. As we all know generally in this weird, changed world, adversity can sometimes bring new circumstances. We now have five new young players who are fast becoming a real and viable part of the first team squad. And thus far, none of them have let us down. The fact they've all come up through the ranks together is a real benefit - they're in the first team squad, supporting one another and know one another's game. This is the first time this has happened at City since I don't know when. Watched Ifollow for the Donnie match, and Scales, Sikora, Cousin-Dawson, Shanks and, of course, Staunton, all looked good. Comfortable on the ball, thinking heads. And I would say, big thumbs up to our youth coaching staff for instilling this philosophy into them. Have been a Bantams fan for 40 years, and potentially, this is the best crop of new homegrown players that I can remember. Can anyone put me right and suggest a better one?

I really liked Sikora good start for the lad, strong and quick at the back. Put one foot wrong and ran back redeeming himself straight away.

Have they changed the rules this year? Wasn't it the rule that you had to start 7 players who played in the previous league game. Mind you that would be pretty hard seeing as there hasn't been a league match yet

I believe the changes were made ahead of last season's competition, since when you can get away with 11 changes to your starting line up, as long as four of your starting line up have made 40 previous first team starts for someone; exactly as City did tonight.

Let’s not get too carried away. Only one game and it sounded like a friendly more than a competitive match

Agree. They've all got loads to learn, but will only do so by being thrown into the melee. I was really impressed with not just the young players efforts, but with their footballing brains.

Think you've done a great job of answering your own question here! Methinks, for the next few months anyway, all EFL et al rules will be up for grabs, given whatever the Covid situation continues to be.

i think given how rarely this sort of thing happens for us, its a good thing to at least feel positive about for the future. I've spent all pre season having 0 optimism for all things city related so its nice to have a bit of hope in something for a change

This is brilliant! Half an hour into posting a positive missive about the potential and possibilities for our new young players, and not one of the usual narcissistic trolls has come on to tear it down.

I couldn't agree more mate. These young players represent the future for City. Everything has changed over the last nine months and for me, they give us a real hope. Like you, haven't felt that around m'City for a while. Go well, keep hoping.

Good to hear positive reviews on the youth. I'll look out for them next time they are out on the pitch.

No one's getting too carried away but "Sounds Like" you're passing comment on a game you didn't watch ?

What I really enjoyed last night was when Staunton game off the bench he looked like a player of stature. His previous appearances, including the Bolton to some extent, you could see he was a 'junior', a little over-awed and just trying not to mess up. Last night he seemed taller and more self-assured about being on the pitch and his place in the squad. I think if the other young players are able to develop in this way, they won't just add depth to the squad but they'll be a serious threat to any complacent first-teamer.

Plus he's been quite negative. We need to give credit and encourage the young lads when they take their first steps in open age football. These young lads can save us money in the transfer market and also in the future make us money if they progress.
It would be great if we could spend money on players like we did in the late 1980s and 90s but thinking back one of the best (and small) squads I can remember City putting together was in the early 80s. Yes we had experienced pros like Bobby Campbell and John Hawley and Eric McManus but we also had quite a few young lads starting their careers, Stuart, Gregg Abbott, John Hendrie, Don Goodman and Tony Clegg. They didn't do too bad did they. Encourage and stop giving it the "negative waves", as Oddball would say.

No ones getting carried away? “Best crop of youngsters we’ve ever had”? Come on.
Just a little warning there’s no need to get carried away yet. Nice to hear them play well but means nothing. It’s one game.
Jordan Gibson looked good in one off games

I never said don’t have hope. Just a little warning that it’s a one off game and they’ve got a lot to prove
Of course it’s positive they coped well. No ones denying that but it’s a long season

Whats negative about saying it’s only one game and we need to not get too carried away?

I agree. Thought that too. On the flip side, I thought French had the same swagger when he came on, and looked a bit complacent.
