I just don’t see what he brings to the party. In his last spell he took 6 games to get going, had a couple of decent games then got injured again. We can’t afford that.
Add to that he’s not that creative and his finishing is questionable I’m struggling to find any positives.Nick_W_, Batmanbantam and Botswana Bantam like this. -
His goalscoring isn't that bad, he was a 1 in 4 for us and he's not an out and out striker. His record is comparable to that of Jack Payne and David Ball.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...bcfc2015, Allotment Bantam and Onside like this. -
People whinging that he isn’t a target man. Yes, it might have been nice to have that option but when you are looking at 2m losses you can’t have everything.
We beat Oxford 2-0 without a target man.
We beat Walsall 4-0 without a target man.
We beat Scunthorpe 2-0 without a target man.
We beat Rochdale 4-0 at their place without a target man.
We beat Accrington 3-0 without a target man.
We beat Shrewsbury 4-3 without a target man.
A target man wouldn’t have helped us win at Luton, Barnsley or Sunderland.
We can beat lower ranked teams but just can’t ruffle the big teams - completely understandable.
Clarke will fit in well with clever players like O’Brien, Payne, Ball and Doyle and will enable us to mix things up. We aren’t managed by Phil Parkinson anymore and a target man isn’t prerequisite for us to stay up this year. -

Openly stating we need another striker and a winger and coming back with two kind of midfielders is a little bit odd.
If he'd brought in some terrible winger and striker at least he would have stuck with what he'd said he planned to do!RonnieBrown, BoingBoing and Dennis like this. -
The one thing I don’t like is Hopkin’s comment to Parker, where he claims it is the fans that wanted a targetman. Yes, some of us did say we needed one, BUT Hopkin himself said he would like one and a winger too. When he didn’t manage it, he then goes on the defensive and suggests he doesn’t need one and that’s how he’s picked teams before. Forgetting that it was HIS desire to bring in those types of player.
As yesterday proved, lots of good crosses into the box, but nobody good enough in the air to win them. There must have been 6-7 times yesterday when Tim Steer and John Dreyer said crosses were just too high for Doyle or that they had brushed off his head.
Although not a great player, I still don’t get why we turned down a chance for Sammon whilst saying yes to ClarkeStop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Silverbantam, Briggus and Dennis like this. -

....thats 19 points from 13 games since Edin left... 1.46 PPG (and that is without a target man as Bruenker doesn't count he was so bad).
We've 14 games left. Extrapolating it projects we may get another 20 pts, putting us on 52 pts.
Whether that is good enough to secure survival who knows. It won't work out so black and white and games we expect to win we'll inevitably lose, and vice versa.
But a lack of a target man won't be the reason why we go down if we do drop....it is the destruction Edin caused during his reign in the opening months of the season. Him signing players on ridiculous contracts before we had a manager appointed. Him insisting on appointing a coach, so he could interfere, rather than a conventional manager, him delaying appointing a coach, the lack of a proper pre-season due to poor planning, starting the season with an unfit squad etc.Rogered Tart, Onside and Dennis like this. -

Atleast we can fill the match day 16 man squad now without relatively untried youngsters and tbh if we are committing to playing football not hoofball he could be a better type of player than a target man

I think the game has moved on from the ‘big target’ man and out and out wingers. Having players with good ball control and speed of thought/movement, seems the way forward.
Pitch sizes vary. For instance Scotland is 74 yards; Oakwell 75; The Valley 73; Accrington 72, Stadium of Light 75; Fratton park 73, whereas valley parade is relatively narrow at 70 yards.
Given the ability of players to cover short distances far quicker than even 20 years ago, then Valley Parade is not a pitch which leads itself to wingers. A five in midfield nullifys them! So better to have skilful players who can cope with the constrained space of our pitch.
Welcome back Billy, hope you stay fit and can work hard on your 30 yard sprints. -
Happy with today's work.
