To be honest, I'd completely forgotten that Drury was caretaker manager for that game, which is why I couldn't understand why you were so adamant that he was likely to have been responsible. So I'm sorry if I gave you the Spanish Inquisition over-zealously!

I agree with you about AOC. Some people seem to have a vendetta against him based on hearsay and supposition. Who really knows what went on in that dressing room last season? It must have been horrendous. The club was a total basket case and I'm sure that there is masses that we don't know about. No doubt when some of last season's players have retired and are less bothered about upsetting anyone we'll start to get first hand insider accounts about the real horrors of last season.
In the meantime I think we have to cut those who are still with us some slack if they are knuckling down and grafting to get us back to L1, which AOC clearly is.

 

Change the record, and grow up, Fordy.

 

Said a few times for me he has been our best defender this season.

You’re just listing things that a professional footballer who proudly wears the club’s shirt should be doing. Do you believe if Jones wasn’t captain his behaviour would have been any different? Some people have a character to lead and others are followers. What matters is that players perform on the pitch and show the pride and desire that we expect (regardless of the armband) and that is what AOC is doing this season.

Last season was a disaster, the whole team, management and back office setup was a joke and no matter if we had Gary Jones as captain or AOC we were still doomed.

 

It's like if someone covered the fire memorial in graffiti. It's just a bit of marble with some names on isn't it? Doesn't matter.

If it were "just a bit of elastic", then why wear it at all? In fact, why don't all eleven wear it? It's because it has meaning and stature, and is something that has to be earnt.

I don't like what he did last season, but I do like what he is doing this season.

 

If AOC is part of a side that gets us promoted then great. Back, almost to square one.

All he's got to do then is carry in that progression and help us back towards the top end of league one.

Then, and only then does he get his "clean slate".

For the record though, that applies to any senior player that was here last year and it's not just directed to AOC.

AOC did not just rip off his (faulty) armband and grind it into the mud where he was standing. He tossed it into our goal net, where it could be retrieved later (and was).
Also - did he mutter "Sod this for a lark" to his team mates ? NO. The term Captain is a title ....... and in terms of football history, the band is a new addition, which I believe was introduced for the referees benefit ? I don't see anything that suggests AOC abandoned his Captains duties, at a time the Club were in turmoil.
This was argued about at the time, yet still it rages on .......

It truly is tiresome, now.

 

He's been near enough faultless this season. Fantastic on Saturday. Had a clean slate with me this season just like the rest. He's proved he's got what it takes to be an asset in this team. The armband was the least of the teams worries that day at Fratton Park I witnessed it myself. If he'd have thrown it down in anger or stamped it into the mud or spat on it I'd understand the uproar. Something of nothing in comparison with what was going on at the club. You really think him keeping the armband on was gonna get us a point that day? Don't even know why an armband is necessary I used to hate wearing it. Didn't make a blind bit of difference whether I had it on or not. Used to take it off quite often and was never questioned as to why.

 

WINNER. Post of the year.

You just know now that same as with Chicksen last year, there is going to be a group of fans not paying any attention to the game and just watching for AOC to make any mistake

Long may his performances continue, but one things for sure, he’ll never be fully accepted by the majority of supporters. It wasn’t just armband gate, but the arguments with the bench during the game, the sulking and his general body language. We were warned about him on other fans forums.

That said, he’s got his head down this season and looks to have changed. He’s part of a squad that are sitting 2nd in the league, so hats off for that. Will he be a fans favourite, probably not. Do I think he cares, no. He just wants to play and win this season which is the most important character trait I’m bothered about right now.
