Exactly. You should hear what an arse I make of names, place name, practically anything up here!! Has improved the mrs tutting and exasperated ‘look’ no end. Tbf she made a right arse of pronouncing some villages near York, one time we were down. Which I obviously didn’t point out….

This is the problem with wokeism. People just waiting to jump in and label others racist, homophobic, gingesrist, misogynistic etc when all they've done is make a comment but phrased it in a non perfect PC manner.

My daughter is the same, I was explaining something to her about the Civil War and used the term negroid whilst talking about the way slaves were referred to. She ripped off my head and shat down my neck.

My favourite incorrect spelling is Keefly....can't remember though where I saw it....

 

I was working in Keighley once and an American couple asked the best way to get to the “Bronte thing in Hayworth”.

 

Came out of Trent Bridge having watched a day's cricket against the Aussies and two lads came up to us and said... "G'day mate, can you tell us how to get to Loo-ga-ba-roo-ga" (only way I can think to type it).

We did laugh at them bless them. Then showed them where the bust stop for Loughborough was.

Speaking for myself, I rather like Loogabaroo! Perhaps someone should go there and, with just the merest hint of a twinkle in his (or her) eye, start convincing everyone that that is the correct pronunciation!

Foreigners get our words and names wrong, we do it right back at them...it will always be thus. We ourselves can't even decide: last I heard, the Sissiter/Siren-sister camps were still at it.

Over here it was always good for a laugh, back in the day, when the football scores were read out on the wireless. Usually it was just the UK transmission, with that reader -- I've forgotten his name -- who always foreshadowed the result with the way his voice went up and down. But when they had to get a local instead to read off a script...Lie-cester, Reeding, Hartle-pool or Hart-lee-pool...
