I picked this up on Facebook - apologies if it’s been shown before.

I’ve no idea of the date ( I am 64 and first went when I was 8), but before my time. I do however seem to remember the row of houses if I’m not mistaken before they were knocked down along with the streets behind the kop. I think the last house at the bottom was the changing rooms where they entered onto the pitch under the kop via the tunnel.

I read somewhere that its about 1949 and it was an fa cup game v Hull City.
I lived next to the ground in the mid 70s(Lupton Street) and don't remember those houses still standing, there were other streets behind the kop but i think they were due for demolition and all empty, there were lots of bricks and debris lying around for the hooligans to chuck at each other!!

I think it was the Third Division (North) match bewteen City and Hull played on Saturday 19 February 1949 in front of an official attendance of 27,083.

That season City finished bottom of the table and Hull were champions, losing only one away match all season, and this was the one, with City winning 4-2 (4 of the 14 goals Hull conceded away from home that season).

The terraced house at the very end of the street was where the teams changed, I believe I'm right in saying they then went down into the cellar where there was a tunnel from the house coming out on the left hand side of the kop, up 5/6 steps and onto the hallowed turf that is Valley Parade.

I think this twitter post and photo by John Dewhirst shows it.
N.B. John later corrected the date of the photo to 1961.

I’m sure I remember the tunnel but I cannot remember when it was filled in.

Reading the replies to that twitter post, it looks like it was initially filled in around 1966 and uncovered and finally dealt with during the rebuilding of Valley Parade in 1986.

Thanks. That would tie in with me then. I first went when I was 8 in 1964, so my memory wasn’t playing tricks with me afterall.

I've got a book somewhere (Valley Parade Memories?) which I think was published by one of the City Gent editors. It has a few photos of the house and as @Bronco@Bronco said the tunnel linked the house to the pitch.
Apparently it used to flood in bad weather and I think it used to suffer from being filled with rats!
The book is up in the loft. I'll dig out one weekend and try and post a few photos from it.
