My dad was the vicar of Greengates, in fact I grew up in what is now the Yorkshire Eye Hospital. He then moved to Shelf, where Bobby Ham used to attend his church, and, for my 21st birthday, got me a signed photo of the team, which is still in pristine condition.

I think the season is 1978/79 or maybe 1977/78

I was having my doubts even as I posted.

Just done the obvious thing and checked a couple of the more readable signatures against the Wikipedia listing of former players. This shows that both Dave Staniforth and Pete Jackson did not join until 1979, so not at all sure from where I got the 21st birthday idea.

So that's that cleared up. (I hope)

Age playing tricks with the memory.....

Join the club mate. I only knew it wasn't 1975 as Steve Baines was still with the dog botherers, Terry Dolan didn't join us until 1976 and the keeper Steve Smith played 100 times for us and managed the team I played Sunday football for. That was a cracking squad by recent standards.

Can’t argue with that, although after this window I feel more optimistic than I have for many a moon

I was down there for an eye problem when the lock down eased in June, that is one impressive building, was it the Vicarage to St John The Evangelist Church across Harrogate Road ?.

Yes it was, although it didn’t have the two wings when we lived there. Living in Sheffield I don’t often have occasion to be over that way, but when I have and I’m driving back up Harrogate Road, I can see my old bedroom window. And I can, in all honesty, say “When I were a lad this were all fields” when passing those new houses below the eye hospital.

I think there is only the middle goalkeeper on there that I can't name.

The player 2nd from the right on the front row was the last player on Manchester United's books to come from Wibsey before Mason Greenwood.

It's got to be 78/79 as John Napier only had one pre-season as manager, which was that one, Rod Johnson left in 1979 and Paul Reaney had been signed in the summer of 1978. Big Joe also left in 1979.

I played football on the pitch behind that house, first introduction to the love of football that I still have. Went to Greengates School circa 1960-64 and the, then headmaster, Sid Clarkson was big on football, great school, great human being and a good foundation that has stood me in good stead!
