    Sure they don't have to sponsor sport but when companies do it's because it provides the best value for money. If they decide to use the budget elsewhere its because they have found a more lucrative way to spend it not because they are cutting their nose off to spite their face because they have an issue with the way the clubs being run

    We'll never know how good the value for money is. What I guess is that a lot of companies(populated by supporters) overlook the value for money aspect because they see it as a way of supporting the club with but something coming the other way.

    I don't think you can ignore the emotional side and if people feel unhappy they will make decisions based on how they feel especially where their football club is concerned.

    These aren't 1 man operations. There would be legal issues with shareholders throwing money at the club without a tangible benefit and pulling out of a deal with a financial benefit for 'emotional reasons' would also have issues.

    And as pointed out above Napoleon's is owned by A & S Leisure Group whose majority owner is Dave Allen a Sheffield born businessman who is a Wednesday fan who has been a board member and part owner of Wednesday. He also owns Chesterfield. So there is hardly a fan based aspect to this

    Maybe that's why Napoleon's no longer sponsor the 1911

    By the way, how do you measure the "tangible" benefit of sponsorship?

    There was a semi-famous US businessman and politician in the 19C called John Wanamaker who is regarded by many as inventing the 'science' of marketing and advertising. He got it about right imo with his much copied saying ..

    'Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half.

    I suspect things haven't changed much from Wanamaker's times!

    Exactly right Dennis. You really can't know and that means that much of this type of local, relatively small scale sponsorship is often an emotional decision rather than a hard business one IMO.
    It must be very difficult to justify starting or stopping sponsorship on the basis of "tangible" results to anyone, shareholders or not.

    I guess some companies see sports sponsorship as a way of giving perks to employees and clients (complimentary tickets, exec box, hospitality etc)

    An old acquaintance of mine was responsible for marketing at Ciba when they sponsored the MR. He readily admitted that the important marketing for Ciba was though trade journals with wide circulation, conferences, research programmes, professional services programmes and not by sponsoring a stand at the local footie club. That was done for PR purposes and for reinforcing the link between an important local employer, the local community and a half-decent sporting club; but it had nothing to do with selling more chemicals!

    The bottom line is interesting ‘supported the club for many years.’ There were a few on here questioning the commitment of JCT, seems the club really do value their long term commitment to the club. Their sponsorship should never be underestimated.

    Edin was told at the time JCT600 provide one sponcors car and that is for the manager who at the time was Stuart McCall.
    You'd have thought Edin would have learnt he's dealing with hard nosed Yorkshire business men.
