sorry Lee but I can;t agree with you about Riley. Playing in his natural right back position he has been as bad if not worse than Chicksen. He isn't going to be any better as a left back.

 

Agree. Its just a safety thing with fans I think as its usually a formation we have played in the past.

I imagine most of us just want to see a performance with a bit of passion, movement, desire and oomph. If that comes, I would suggest that irrespective of the result, it would auger well for the future.

The reason top managers use 4-4-2 is because it offers the most flexibility to change when the game is in play, Other formations can often mean that it is hard to change the style or formation without major changes on the pitch regards players, For instance, You can drop a forward in to midfield and become 4-5-1, or push a midfield player forward and become 4-3-3, or push the wide players forward and become 4-2-4 or at the back push a full back forward and go 3-5-2
All these changes can be made using nil or one sub depending on personnel keeping the balance of the team without to much disruption and a system players understand

 

Callum Guy scored a great goal on debut for them. Wish we had gone back in for him. He will fight like hell in midfield we need to match his enthusiasm

 

Whilst I agree with what you say, which top manager uses 442 currently?

 

I think when you have a completely new team, the answer is to keep it simple until you can establish a pattern that all players are comfortable with. The 442 system everyone knows and as @trevor states is easy to adjust. Hopkin may go on to develop a different pattern and system but atm keep it simple.

 

Nearly all of them at some stage in the season, It is Mourinho most used formation with Man Utd, Chelsea use it often while Man City and Liverpool tend to favour 4-3-3 they have switched in game to a 4-4-2 simply by moving a player in to midfield, And of course the mighty Barcelona more often than not line up 4-4-2 nowadays
Man City prefer 4-3-3 but often will change in game to 3 at the back but will use other systems as the game progresses

 

That is just simply not true. The top teams do not play 4-4-2. Definitely not Mourinho's most used formation haha. Who partners Lukaku up front? Sanchez would be the only one and he clearly plays from the left. Chelsea also don't use it often. When have you seen Giroud and Morata on the pitch at the same time unless it's the last 5 mins and they need a goal so it's lump it up to the 2 big lads? The only time Mourinho played 2 up front was at Inter with Milito and Eto'o.

Leicester won the title playing 4-4-2 and you've not mentioned them. Man City lined up the other week with Aguero and Jesus up front and that was probably the first time Pep has ever used 2 strikers on the pitch at the same time as out and out strikers (not one pushed wide like Jesus was when he first came).

 

That lad Jesus should be comfortable playing in any position, and if he's not his dad would get involved, and you dont want that.

 

Man Utd have indeed switched to a mainly 4-3-3 formation to be able to fit Fred in to the team, Sanchez,Rashford, Lukaku, Martial, and Lingard have all played as a front 2 at some stage

 

Not true at all, sorry. Man Utd played 4-2-3-1 last season and have played 4-3-3 this season except against spurs where it was more like bielsa's 3-3-1-3. If you can show me where Lingard has played of part of a front 2 I will be impressed, especially within a 442 system.

I was also highlighting it as you were saying it was Mourinho's most used formation to tailor it to your argument. Definitely 100% not the case.

 

That might be his best position - in the dressing room lacing boots for the 1st team.

 

IF so, then perhaps a 3 5 2 formation at Blackpool ? Failing that: 3 4 2 1 Christmas tree style ? (But I doubt it).
