We don't need another right wing back though. Halliday and Gillead should be more than enough there. Especially if we're bringing back Oyegoke which seems reasonably likely.

Feel a tad for the lad, but as we also saw with Wright last year chasing a bit more money even at a higher level doesn't always work out well. He shouldn't have gone to a club bottom of the league imo, when a goalie is out of form like he was the last thing you need is to be facing a bombardment of shots every game. That said, I then remember he was also desperate to go to Barnsley, so two offers and he was keen to leave so he's made his bed so he can lay in it.

I guess 99% of fans will have seen the Carlisle situation in Jan and marked them for relegation. It's purely got to have been a money move? I remember at the time on their forum, Carlisle fans were certain they pretty much doubled his money and I think the T&A printed similar? Short term focus by Lewis.

The Barnsley offer completely turned his head in my view. He was never the same player, in interviews he didn't look as chirpy, on matchdays he rarely had the on field enthusiasm he did the season before, although that could be said for most of the team in the first half of the season.

The problem I have is whereby he rode on the crest of a wave after his move from Southampton , joining a “reasonable” team under MH. Any odd error was swamped by a generally winning team but didn’t matter as much. He thought on that basis, his only trajectory was up. The Barnsley offer came in which re-emphadised that in his mind . That was knocked on the head and he became deflated and errors grew and became more noticeable. Carlilse csme along with a double your money deal and he accepted it without thought of what he was getting into. A team on the down where his errors would now amplify…… Carlilse now looking for a new keeper! That’s my take?

Seemed a strange decision by Lewis judging by where Carlisle were as a club at the time but the lad had to do what he thought was right at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and football is full of decisions that don't always go the way you want. That's not to say they were poor decisions, they were right for the player at the time and really that's all that matters. Not sure why our fans online tend to want to berate the lad, he always comes across as a decent fella and didn't owe us anything. Good luck to the lad going forward, that luck usually defines a player's career in the power leagues.

It's the bit highlighted which I find baffling with the move. Surely him, his agent, family, all keep an eye on football and could see a million miles away that Carlisle were going down? He was going to be a L2 keeper again come August, just now on better money (guessing that huge increase took a massive cut with relegation though).

The move has done him no favours, conceded 43 in 20 games with just 2 clean sheets, marking his CV with a disaster spell in L1. I cant see any team with a brain going in for him? Wrexham need a completely new keeper room with all theirs leaving on a free or loans ending, he's from roughly that neck of the woods? Seeing your manager publicly say a week after the season ends that he wants a new keeper would have me on the phone to my agent....

I think the problem for Lewis was that he knew he had lost form and this was probably his chance to get a move higher up so took it in the hope he could regain form. With his best quality being shot stopping he thought it would be a good chance to showcase that and get a move higher up.

Reading the comments from Simpson he says that he wants "somebody who is in between Harry and Gabe in terms of experience and age." then says he had someone in mind on loan from a Premier League club last summer but it fell through. It sounds like he's wanting to get someone in to challenge Lewis rather than going in as the number 1 but doesn't think their current 2nd choice is up to it yet. https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/simmo-keeper-want-carlisle-united-040000239.html

His deal with us was expiring this summer with a possible 1 year extension so going to Carlisle got him an extra 1 year guaranteed wage at least. Like strikers can have 1 amazing season where they score 25 and never get close to it again, I wounder if this is the goalkeeping equivalent of it.

I dont feel for him one bit. He left us for a tinpot club who were struggling in L1 and a real chance of relegation.

His mistakes. Just glad we got compensated and looks like a brilliant bit of business.

Possibly. I know hindsight is always 20/20, but even at the time there were a lot questioning how good this move was for the player. But I suppose we got a 6 figure fee for him, cant ask for much more given the form he was on at the time and the deal coming up.

Could have been agents pushing a move too? If anyone listens to Under the Cosh, the Stephen Warnock episode from last week or the week before was a good listen but he has a few stories over a really bad agent he had who was trying his best to work the system.

Gary Jones played sheds more games though, that's my point. Croasdale has play less than 100 in the FL. I want someone better, someone younger, someone more dynamic, captain at Stockport or not (which given Smallwood is ours kind of negates the impact of that !).

You cannot get everything you want in life you have to make decisions do I do this or that. Chasing money is one way football agents keep their bank accounts full it very rarely is good for footballer and agent. On paper it looks a poor decision by Lewis, but he no doubt will be enjoying the extra cash. Long term it is a disaster and he will need to work incredibly hard to get back to the same level. I certainly don’t feel sorry for him he chose to listen to the agents whispering in his ear.

#sowhat. He didn't win it for them personally. I want better, more experienced and younger. Not joining a w*nkfest over a 30 year old with less than 100 league games.
