Ahh fair enough. I remember it being on the table but had no idea it was scrapped. But as said, they are in another realm to the rest of us in terms of income.

That will be the kicker for them. No established club in the Championsip can succeed without being funded by their owner at the moment. Of the 6 clubs who have published their accounts for last year, all make serious losses and 5 have debts with their owners of >£100m built up over the last few years. To put it into context, all of those clubs pay more in players wages than they receive in income from all sources. It's a scary prospect for any lower lesgue club with Championship aspirations. Some try to do with minimal support from their owners but are soon back in Div 1.

This one demonstrates the level of debt in the championship at the minute..... https://x.com/christoph_21/status/1749371344293122291?s=20

It’s unsustainable as things are and will just lead to financial meltdown. When we won promotion to the Premier league we were up against the likes of Bury, Crewe, Grimsby, Stockport,Tranmere, those days are long gone and you need a billionaire to challenge at the top end of the championship.

The FFP rules used in the Championship and PL are bizarre and perverse. They allow clubs to make significant losses -£13m and £35m per season respectively - without breaching the rules so long as some of the excess losses are funded with equity from the owners.

On top of their other huge costs, Everton are spending a small fortune on their new ground largely funded by loans. Because of this and the way they accounted for it, they breached the rules. I believe it was a technical breach on their part because they ballsed up their financials unlike at least one other well-known club! I suspect it will be overturned - at least in part - on appeal.

The Premier League and EFL rules are different rules set by 2 different organisations with different interpretations and exemptions. The Premier League allows a £15m loss over 3 years or £105m if £90m is covered by secure funding from the owner. The Championship is £5m loss plus a £8m secured funding from the owner per year. The EFL also allows more 'donations'. The EFL tend to punish more with transfer embargos than points deduction like the Premier League are starting to do.

You are right bizarre and perverse. A system designed to curb overspending allows over spending and accruing annual debt.

I believe the way it works is that anyone who is under contract already on promotion has a set value for their contract until they sign a new one and then the actual value is recognised. For example, even if someone is under contract at £100k a year, they only count for say £50k until the contract ends. I can't remember what the token figure is though but that's why teams coming up from NL can invest more at least in their first year if they have the majority of the squad under contract already.

The form of FFP used in the PL and the Championship is known as P&S (or S&P depending who you talk to). That stands for Profitability and Sustainability! Nothing could be further from the truth in reality.

The old “signing they’ve been working on for a while” line that’s been trotted out ad nauseum by the club.

Would you sooner have a last minute Guthrie scenario or an early signing that suggests both player and club have known about for a while?

That's not quite right. That would have been the case had the squad salary cap regime been introduced. The nominal figure was set at about £67k. But it was scrapped and never implemented. The EFL then reverted (quietly) to the original SCMP regime.
