Barnsley (H) - August 11th

I did think some of his substitutions were strange. Riley off for seedorf made sense, but can’t see how Wright wasn’t oiked off for McGowan and O’Connor pushed alongside akpan to wrestle back some strength in midfield.

Desperate for some support for Doyle and chicksen to central defence was baffling.

Lots for Collins to learn from that performance, mainly from Barnsley

 

I think we saw the Champions today.

 

Barnsley were indeed quality today, but so what about playing in the Championship, if we'd drawn them in the cup, we'd have fancied our chances.

My match summary = we was shite and got what we deserved feck all .

 

Totally agree about subs. What was the point of sending Robinson on when the defence was being totally overwhelmed? He hardly touched the ball and even if he had got a cross in neither Doyle nor Miller we're getting hold of any balls, the Barnsley defence was keeping them out of the game.

 

Absolutely agree!

Can't believe some of the negativity on here. For a team cobbled together over the summer I thought we looked half decent against a very good team who will likely be in the top 2 come may.

Yes, there's work to be done, but did people seriously think we would be the finished article after just two games.

I seem to remember Barnsley scoring twice as many goals against their last opponents.

Come on. Let's take the positives out of the game (of which there were many) and lets work on the negatives and after a few more games we'll be a force to be reckoned with.

O'Connor and Akpan in midfield? No thanks.

 

Tell us of these many positives from today. I'll give you three. Seedorf looked sharp when he came on and O'Donnell made a couple of good saves although his distribution was poor. O'Connor the pick of a pretty shaky defence. Definitely work in progress but not much if anything to take from today.

 

I think Robinson should start at wing back if we persist with 3 CBs. Happy for Chicksen to play at LB in a back 4 but in a back 5 I think the wing back needs to be able to beat a man and be more of an attacking threat.

Preferably I would like to see us play a back 4 but this change could improve our chances with a back 3/5. I think I’d be tempted to bring Killa in as well instead of NKP. Hopefully Killa and McGowen both get fit and playing soon as they, along with O’Connor, are probably our best CBs.

 

And there you have it, the reason we might have good players but not go up this season, people on this forum can see things ahead of our inexperienced coach

 

A better question might be, why were we cobbled together, and to what purpose?

Why has an inexperienced manager got such a ridiculous task?

Steve Evans or Phil Parkinson would struggle to get these players gelling after, what, two or three first team friendlies.

When we were signing players left, right and centre and there wasn't even a head coach in sight, alarm bells should have been ringing. We might have recruited good players in the Summer, but did we actually recruit well? Did we recruit a TEAM, or did we recruit some guys with talent?

Early days yet, but don't be surprised that people are concerned (which I guess you term 'negative'?)

 

The inexperience was exemplified by the decision to throw a winger on for a defender, and push Chicksen to centre back.

I doubt there was any logic there whatsoever beyond "it's more attacking", but "more attacking" could have been achieved in ways that didn't leave us with one true centre back.

 

I would go 442 next week try Payne centre mid along side Akpan leave Wright out and put Riley to left back and mc gowen for Nkp.Also put scannell to right and robbo left mid mellor up top with Doyle.

We had no shots on target FFS.

Looked like a game of Lads vs Dads.

Outplayed, out muscled, outthought.

Barnsley looked a decent side but we made it very easy for them.

 

Early days, but stop trying to over complicate it FFS. I've seen very few teams do 3 at the back well in this league.

Scannell is an out and out right winger - play him there!
Doyle needs strike partner - give him one!
Riley isn't ready to be a wing back. Mellor earned strong reviews at right back. Let's get round pegs in round holes - and let's get NKP and Chicksen into literal holes.

We need more quality. Up front and in midfield - Wright needs to improve a lot.

Just watched back the goals from yesterday.
That second goal looks even worse 2nd time around.
Weak defending from O'Connor to allow the big man to hold him off, terrible covering defending from NKP and poor goalkeeping from O'Donnell letting it squirm through his legs to allow the tap in.
