Fwiw I worked in the gambling industry for 11 years and I do think the level of gambling advertising has gone over the top.

the problem is that if it isn’t cigarette companies or alcohol firms, it is gambling firms…. It’s a vice of some sort.

clubs really don’t care as long as they get a cheque for the deal.

So many cowboy online bookies are around these days - utilising the fact everyone has a mobile and people stream matches via devices and at home these days - so they have upped the number of firms advertising football compared to the 90s etc

I was surprised to learn that almost 20 clubs in the PL and Championship use betting companies as their principal shirt sponsor. The PL (and I think the EFL as well) have now agreed to ban betting advertising on the front of shirts from 2025. That's in line with many other elite leagues elsewhere in Europe.

Will betting advertising ever be banned completely in sport? I doubt it since taxes on betting are so important to the Govt's finances. And of course, football's main media outlet, Sky, also has its own interest in betting via SkyBet!

But always remember please gamble responsibly. A very thinly veiled disclaimer. In reality the companies care not one iota for victims of gambling addiction, they actively encourage it and are allowed to do so. I know a guy who was a shop manager who eventually resigned on principle fighting this.

Added to by the absolute simplicity of being able to do it 24x7 x365 on a flippin mobile phone.

You seldom heard of gambling addicts when one had to get on a bus to find a bookies?

Betting , let’s face it, is based on one principle , taking money out of one’s pocket.

Anything in moderation is fine and I’m sure enjoyable to many but the sheer potential for addiction and thus misery, is huge!

Who would family members be banned by?
Sky don't actually own SkyBet, they sold 80% in 2015 and remaining 20% in 2018. Comcast, who own Sky, have the rights to the Sky name but that is it.

Betting Firms themselves close lots of accounts. Anyone who wins or sometimes those they suspect have inside info (more case with horses).

It strikes me that Gambling Firms, could ban the sort of betting that is more open to abuse, such as yellow/red cards. Given all the things open to those who bet, withdrawing that and other options, which could be readily abused, seems to be one way forward, and will still allow punters a lot of other avenues to place bets on.

Playing devil's advocate regarding betting sponsorship, should the league also ban alcohol sponsorship and sales in the ground? I'd wager alcohol causes more addiction and health issues than gambling. Where do you draw the line? Papa John's pizza linked to obesity? There would be very few companies with the capital to invest the billions needed to fund the levels of sponsorship we see throughout the leagues and 92 clubs. The overwhelming majority of gamblers (and drinkers for that matter) don't have a problem, but it's right that support should be there for those that do.
As for Chapman, I wonder if he's known this was coming for a while now. He certainly seemed to play as if the world was on his shoulders for most of last season.

We could do with any ban he may receive starting in August as he is not expected to return to full fitness until October according to Mark Hughes.

Everyone talking like he's been placing bets, does someone know something I don't? I've not seen anywhere where it alludes to this.

I know how to read...I read this:

"Where a participant provides to any other person any information relating to football which the participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time, the participant shall be in breach of this rule where any of that information is used by that other person for, or in relation to, betting."

Just saying that is like saying if I give you £40 that I'm culpable if you decide to go and buy cocaine with it.

    More like this

    Insider dealing
    noun
    noun: insider trading
    1. the illegal practice of trading on the stock exchange to one's own advantage through having access to confidential information.

He's either been betting or provided information to another to make a bet. The latter is insider dealing, stock exchange or not.

Could have said "abc is about to happen at xyz" to person A in confidence and then person A has thought "hmm, I might stick a bet on that".

I'm not saying it is one or the other - what my point was is that people are so quick to jump all over people it's akin to how to media reacts to absolutely anything.

I interpreted the alleged offence to be that Chapman passed on - at the time - confidential information, from which another person used to place a bet.

It will all come out in the wash soon enough. Like another poster said above, it sounds like Chapman has 2-3 months to go before being ready for game time. If he does receive a ban, then let's hope it is not significant and is completed during his recovery period.
