Spot on Idle. No point in flogging yourself to death, no more than 3 points and avoid injury

That was probably Gilly’s best game for City. Him and Smallwood were immense. Someone has to do the dirty stuff and they were exceptional today. They both have fantastic “engines”.

I thought we won without getting out of second gear , kept them at arms length . Preserved energy on a hot day, with another game coming Tuesday.
Its a virtual new squad and hopefully those odd rough edges will wear off with increased game time.

Agree regarding Gilly. For me, the most impressive thing about City is how we react when we lose the ball. Newport didn't have any time to settle on the ball today. City were all over them and this is Gilly's main strength. I know he splits opinion but I can see why Hughes favours him in this role.

Yep my take on the game concurs with yours.

Nice goal from Smallwood and perseverance from Chapman.

Felt after we went one up, we lost the edge we started with.

Straight red card helped. Given some of the other misses, Cook could well have messed up, so totally reckless by their guy.

We get the second in the 53rd minutes, and rather than putting them on toast, we seemed to lose a lot of impetus.

Agree with the views on Gilliead, a great work rate and he carries the ball well.

We really should have put four or five past them.

Mark Hughes was perhaps diplomatic when he said, "I thought we managed the game out quite easily towards the end, but without creating enough chances given that we had the extra man, that was a little bit disappointing”.

Finally my view was that the referee ,Will Finnie had a really good game!

Yes Rod, the referee did seem to have a decent game all-in-all.

The referee on the Midland Road side must have been instructed to make minimum calls because he gave nothing.

I thought Chapman had a cracking game today at last someone who is prepared to run and take on defenders and get in the box

I thought the lad Jake Young who came on looked VERY neat and tidy, too. Quick feet, willing to shoot on sight.

Can see him causing a lot of problems.

I think we need the wingers to get more up to speed before we see the best of Oliver. At this moment in time, Eisa & Osadebe are out, Young for the time being is being used as a super sub, Chapman is having to play in the middle to cover Walker & Banks is still getting up to speed.

The performance against Doncaster was too narrow, we did use the flanks more effectively today in the second half once Young came onto the left. I think its just a case of the team getting to know one another. You can see the likes of Halliday getting more acclimatised to our play style the way he’s timing his over lapping runs. It’l take time but i’m sure the acquisition of Oliver will bare fruit in the long run

I think today was only a glimpse of what he is capable of. He is a very good player for this level, today showed he has what it takes. But lets see how good he can be once he’s firing on all cylinders

Not quite sure why I should refrain from commenting on a good performance.I think the squad are coming together which is great to see. However, in my view we are beginning to see a really good team emerging out of the squad. Everybody who comes on is putting a performance in. Are we there yet? no we are not but we are most certainly getting there.

He seemed quite tentative pre season Park, clearly he finding his feet, I said the other day , I wasn’t certain about him yet, but he did contribute and fitted in well yesterday. A confidence player for sure…..what happens when Walker is fit ? Another dilemma for MH!

I think Angol is the dilemma at the moment. Playing out on the left doesn't suit him, although he did create a couple of chances second half with good trickery. I think Hughes will stay with him because of his height and heading ability, but I'm not sure we're getting the best from him being stuck out there.

Energy sapping afternoon with a winning performance.
Thought Newport with and without a player gave a good account of themselves and never stopped running all afternoon.
Certainly signs the players are starting become accustomed to each others traits, bodes well going forward.

We beat a Hull team that you have to question if they took the match seriously

We got our first win on Saturday against a poor Newport team.

Point is we can’t say anything is coming together as yet. Let’s see how Tuesday and the match after that goes.

1 win and we are all excitable.

But we have height in the middle and heading ability in Cook or Oliver.

Angol leading the line playing as a lone forward works. Him on the left doesn’t.
