Match Thread Derby County Friendly (H) @ 3 pm Saturday 9 July 2022

Brilliant pre season game for me today.. we couldnt have faced a better club for the test and i know what Hughes means by he got exactly what he needed out of it.. we should have been beating this Derby County team today and thats what i feel he will have taken out of it and meant with that comment there..

Last week this club was on its backside.. had 5 players signed on.. theyve brought in whilst having signing/budget restrictions in place structure permitting with club future uncertainty.. scurried around at the death and got some experience in over the line that will start the season but lets be honest none of them even got minutes for them today..

Fair play 2 Derby County they showed up in the stands.. on the songs and dealt with us convincingly..........

Apart from his 1 dodgy clearance but excellent recovery stop from it i thought are keeper really looked the part.. has feet.. hands.. commands.. i think we finally have a big missing link to a promotion finally here..

Like i said brilliant game because im not keen on how Hughes has gone about the market if im honest as i expected more.. players in to try bounce league 1 with same squad possibly as appose to the rip up and start again we are looking like if we do get a promotion but no doubt wages/budget/lads no fancying the drop is the cause of it market wise for this season..

Hope im wrong but wont be the stroll a few are expecting this season imo due to market activity.. hes hoping on getting an extra 20% from everybody to force it..

Good game.. took alot out of it and sure the club did.. enjoyed it..

Unbelievable that Hendrie wasn't even playing yet some deduced from yesterday's game that we need a RB

It wasn't something that was 'deduced' yesterday. There are many who have been saying we need a quality RB for months. If you're happy with Hendrie as first choice and Threlkeld and FCD as back up, then I think the jokes on you.

Correct people have been saying it for months. I agree about the back up, but Hendrie is a capable L2 full back who won't let us down. Could we get better? Sure. But he's not the massive weakness some seem to think.

I don't think anyone has said he is a massive weakness. He is as you say, a capable L2 fullback who will always give 100%. Teams that are serious about promotion though need more in key areas than just 'capable'.
What happens when your 'capable' RB is suspended or injured, and your alternatives are less than capable? It's not a good luck for a team supposedly serious about promotion. RB has been a problem position for us for the last few seasons, it is a key position and there are a lot of people who would like us to take it a bit more seriously. I'm sure there will be replies to this saying we have Sutton and Odasebe that can play there as well but again, it's missing the point.

 

Alright you got me. I'm at risk of sounding pedantic but people on this thread have said we need cover at LB, cover at CB, and a new RB. I agree it looks like we need cover for Hendrie at RB. I don't think Sutton is a good enough defender to cover, but might make a good wing back

 

Yes I agree we need back up for Hendrie and I think the other 2 would be wing backs rather than full backs. Much as we would love it, we are not going to have L1 / Championship quality players on big wages for every position

 

He might not everyone's choice for RB but I suspect Hendrie has already nailed down the position of scapegoat before the season has even started

 

I think right back is priority in my opinion at the moment.

I like Hendrie, steady away, but we need better in my opinion. I would imagine MH is looking to bring in someone better than Hendrie too, rather than a squad player to provide cover.
