Lots of good free signings over the years

Best value for a transfer fee paid is the £7,500 paid to Guiseley for James Hanson

The worst value for money by a country mile is the £2.5m paid to our friends from East of Pudsey for David Hopkin, and as others have said, he came back to haunt us as a manager

I was actually talking about the money we got from SheffU for him but you're right, paid peanuts for him.

Nahki Wells, as much as he went to Huddersfield we got him for free and went for upwards of a million?

Big Jimmy for 7k was a steal for his service to our club.
Then made a decent profit selling a broken player who we had the best out of

Not 1 particular player but that’s season where we spend 0.5M on Reeves, Mcartan and Poleon was diabolical recruitment.

Yes I believe we paid around £1.5m for Weatherall.
Hamilton said he thought Kammy was taking the piss when he told him he was going to Newcastle for £2.2 mill, that was a lot of money back in 1997, and it was Kenny Dalglish who took him to Newcastle.

Graham Taylor giving us £650,000 for Sticks to go to Aston Villa, although he made a decent living playing at Villa, Derby, Leicester.
McCall from Rangers on a free was great business, Beages, Whalley, Lawrence.
Bobby Campbell on a free because only Mulhall trusted him, then selling him to Derby to bring him back (on a free) ? to kick start that season.

I thought Mick Woods came to Valley Parade as part of the deal but apparently not Oates went to Blackburn in 1974 and Woods came to us in 1978, could have sworn there was a player swap between the two clubs, any help ?.

I'll go out on a limb...committing ourselves to about £8m in wages for Benito Carbone plus signing-on fees was insanity. Nothing against him, he was a superb footballer but not what we needed.

Best signing was probably £50k for Beagrie. Tremendous player.

I remember reading daily star sports page on Magaluf beach in 97 and we had signed Beagrie and Lawrence for 50k each. Could never have imagined then how good they would be.
What about Jimmy Quinn, not here long but classy player. Think he went to WHU? but cant remember where he came from or for how much

We had a glut of players from Millwall as FT in early 90s.
Ste Torpey, Wesley Reid, Alan Dowson, Darren Morgan, Darren Treacy and a certain Phil Babb who went to Cov for good money. Reid was ok and think went to Airdrie.

Yes, he was a good one. Came from Leicester in exchange for Micky Kennedy, and went to West Ham for 320,000.

A good buy from just a bit earlier was Brian Mitchell. Oh for a back line now with such players to choose from: Mitchell, Evans, Oliver, Sinnott, Jacko, Goddard...

On the other side, a few who haven't been mentioned yet:

Tony Adcock and Ian McCall never justified their fees for us. Adcock was another example of our ability across the decades to reduce good strikers to has-beens. More recently, some monies were wasted on Jake Speight and Scott Neilson.

We paid a fee for Bruenker, Topp wasn’t free either IIRC. Mark Stewart who we ended up paying £250k for after a tribunal. Andy Tod was £100k I think
