Having thoroughly read today's issue of "The Football League Paper", a truly prestigious organ, one thing struck me....well two, if you count the grump's dishcloth bouncing off my head thrown with the accuracy of Phil The Power Taylor at his peak.... Looking at the top scorers in League 2 I scanned down the long list..and scanned..and scanned. 27 names listed. Doyle of Swindon with 9..and down through the rest. Even the bottom two teams were represented. Alessandra of Morecambe with 5 and Guthrie of Stevenage also with 5. Of the top 17 teams, only two had no representatives in the 27. Plymouth and..you guessed it!. Simple question..why?. Injuries?, We like to share it around?..surely not a misprint!?!?..or???

Guess it's sharing it around... is that 8 different scorers in 5 games now? Vaughan will need to start putting it in though with Donaldson out so long

And yet only 4 teams have scored more goals than us. Would much prefer it that way with everyone contributing. Other teams are reliant on individuals as are more likely to suffer from injuries.
It’s very common, particularly in the lower leagues, that the best teams do not have the best goal scorers on paper

I would rather be sitting in 2nd spot with our top scorer on 3
Than 23rd or 24th with our top scorer on 5.

No issue for me at the moment

The subject was raised recently. Same issues as this thread. https://bantamtalk.com/index.php?threads/main-strikers-lack-of-goals.3145/

Over reliance on one player to score goals isn’t a good thing. I thought Swindon looked bang average when we played them. Maybe they are an average team but maybe losing Doyle was a big blow to them.

I’m very happy for us to continue with our current approach of spreading the goals out amongst the squad.

Swindon have lost three of their last four - the question is, is it a wobble or are they simply not good enough to challenge?

Just an average team with him as their latest results prove.

and in a break with tradition, the EFL are proposing that promotion will now be decided by how many representatives a team has in the Football League Paper top 27 list. Swindon and Morecambe have both sad they'll support the proposals

WhY DoEs It MaTtEr WhO ScOrEs ThE gOaLs. We'Re WiNnInG.

    A very short sighted attitude.

The only way this would be a non issue is if our top 3 spot was guaranteed. A few extra goals from our strikers may well be the difference between another season in league 2 and promotion. It's great that we're second but at this stage how would anyone know that the missed chances vs Cheltenham for example won't cost us, and that the OP doesn't have a point?

Our forwards are currently struggling. Let's not gloss over this because there'll be a point in the season when we need them and on current evidence they'll cost us points.

We are fortunate in that we can mix up Vaughan, Donaldson and now Oteh and the likes of Ismael, Pritchard and Connolly, yet still get results.

Pitches will be getting horrible now and the injuries and suspensions start to hit teams. The more options we have the better. Keeping Cooke fit is key to everything though.

You could easily say that it's a matter of time before Vaughan hits a hot patch and until that happens, the midfield is doing a sterling job covering for him while he runs dry.

    Looks very promising then.

All about how you dress it up, but the meat and potatoes of the argument is that we're winning games without an on form goalscorer, AND we have a candidate who is likely to score goals sooner or later in Vaughan.

Donaldson's absence is a concern, but it is what it is.

I would imagine Swindon are hoping it's a wobble, yet I personally think it's a lack of depth within their squad - So your "simply not good enough" may well apply, Jon :)

But not just Cooke alone, Borders ........... As the loss of Pritchard on Saturday showed. And no need to wait for injuries to start - City began theirs in pre-season ! ;)
But yes, you're correct ....... Other teams will soon start to 'suffer', too. I wonder if Exeter are just experiencing a 'blip' ?
Whilst at the same time, the very slow starters are now picking up an odd Win or two...... Which is why I also think the table will look so very different after the Christmas fixtures.

Doyle has scored again! Is that 10 for Swindon?
