Portsmouth captain! It'd be pretty amazing. Just can't believe it. Can't see the reason for him moving/wanting to move. They did ok last season. Got to be play-off contenders this season?

    NO - 'WE' don't !!

Forces, Policemen and Fire service personnel have what may be considered a shorter life span. The difference being that footballers are much better paid, by far ......... And a lower risk of dying whilst doing their job !

As ex forces and ex police I can say that the career life span for those professions is longer than a professional footballers.

The average football career is 8 years or thereabouts.

The main difference is in the military and police generally the individual chooses to stay in or leave.

A professional footballer does not in most cases choose the date of termination.

No real issue (with you) from me Norman, other than these 'footballers' have so much free time, they can (if they wish) pursue other interests and PLAN for life beyond 30 years old.
If they fail to plan for their own futures .......... why the Hell should you and I care ?

I agree. Hence why I was putting forward that moving down divisions but back 'home' may be the pragmatic thing to do.

I disagree. I paid (PVR ) after 6 years into a 9 year contract. And that was deferred for 12 months as I served my second term of NI. NOT my choice, but accepted. (Sod all I could do about it ! ;) )

Not being funny guys and this is genuine, but is Scannell all that? I know his name and know he’s been at Town for quite a few years, but other than that, I know little about him.

A quick research suggests that he had 2 injuries last season (groin keeping him out for 3 games and then shoulder keeping him out for months). Prior to that he joined Burton where he got 1 assist in 19 appearances and finished the season coming off the bench for 5mins here, 6mins there.

The season before that, in Town’s promotion season, he managed 1 assist in 19 games. He didn’t feature between December and early April (was he injured as I could find nothing to suggest he was) and then came back into the squad for the final few games.

In the 15/16 season he scored once and created 4 in 19 games. In fact you have to got back to 14/15 for the last time he played more than 20 times. He managed 4 goals and 8 assists in that season (45 appearances).

As I said, this is just data so feel free to add something that warrants the hype of him being a good signing (if it comes off). I’m not trying to be argumentative or anything; I’m generally interested as to whether his stats don’t back up his ability/worth to the team.

He's played over 300 games in his career and they are all in the Championship. You don't need to doubt his ability at this level.

Scannell was once regarded as a 'top prospect', Wayne.

He suffered a few 'minor blows' but kept bouncing back, even stronger. It was no surprise he was held in high regard. However, time and injuries are taking their toll, and perhaps he's winding down, albeit prematurely ?
If City can make good use of his 'final years' then it's an OK from me . ;)

Cheers Ronnie and what is his style?

Is he similar to Chris Brandon, Kyel Reid, Nicky Summerbee or is he more similar to Peter Beagrie?

Aaron Mclean played 125 times in the Championship, 112 times in L1 and 81 times in L2, but he has still been crap since 2010/11.

History means nothing mate. What has he done in the last 3/4yrs and what does he bring to the table if he doesn’t score or provide assists? Does he play more defensive these days?

Hudders paid Palace £900k for him so you'd think there must be something about him.Hudders have moved on with better quality now so he'll be surplus to requirements in premiership.

With his skills will be draw more free kicks around the opposition penalty area / earn us more corners - may be this is how he picks up some of injuries being clobbered by the opposition. It then falls to a player with dead ball skills for us to take advantage - as i alluded to earlier - have we recruited one of are we recruiting one?

Unlike Aaron McLean, Scannel is PROVEN in the division above. There could be a host of reasons for him failing in his division such as motivation, fitness etc but in response to your point about his ability, he's already shown that talent wise, he's a class above.
