is it still part of Scottish new builds that light switches have to be reachable from wheel chairs and sockets too even if building for yourself?

switches no higher than 1100mm from floor level and sockets not lower than 400mm from floor to bottom edge. 150mm above work tops, there’s also stIpulation as to how close sockets can go to an internal corner - 350mm. When our backs are sore, we’ll be glad of the socket heights  the thing is, it’s done for the best intentions, you might flog your house and someone buys it that will benefit from reduced height, plus i guess we never know what the future holds. When the are stairs, you have to build it with space factored in for a stair lift, stuff like that.

I get it for houses to be sold as new but if building for yourself it should be upto you.

Fair enough, don’t agree though it’s really not an issue, visually or amenity wise. These are building standards. Plus the amount of times someone says i’m building this for me to live in, but then flog it or do it as a holiday let. Would you pick and choose on anything else? They make you meet criteria for energy efficiency and using renewable tech, good things in the long run. Will cost you more initially though.

I think it is an issue visually as the sockets are just too high and are more obvious to the eye. Closer to the floor makes them less obvious. As with a lot off building standards they are only standard because that is what someone has decided. Is there a safety reason for the distance from the floor?

as for then selling the building on again that is their choice, if it makes it harder to sell as they have put the sockets lower that should be their decision

no one ever mentions it tbh, and these are really modern new builds, switches and sockets can look quite nice, the days of clunky looking white fittings are gone. The only thing people have issue with is smoke alarms interrupting their ceiling ‘clean lines’, which I find incredible tbh. Too many people have done whatever they like in the past (and not necessarily in a good way) it’s good there are standards imo. I get your point but it’s not practical to accommodate everyones wishes.
